"they would like the fact that McLaren Park is nearby and it is very dog friendly. they would also like the fact that most people have dogs and walk them during lunch or after work in the neighborhood, and they are mostly very well trained."

  • Trulia User
"Some times it can get very noisy and congested in the morning hours with all the traffic and kids getting out of school "
  • Trulia User
"It’s outer limits and aged homes along with mission street. Ingleside is nearby within 12 minutes on muni 29."
  • Trulia User
"Some area can be rough. But it is definitely getting better over the years. The only issue we have now are young kids doing donut in different intersections and loud motorbikes passing by. "
  • Trulia User
"My neighborhood has great access to public transportation and commute to downtown is bus & Bart & bicycle & car"
  • Jordan W.
"Lived here for over 2 years now. Incredibly diverse neighborhood. Lots of families and children, many of who have lived here for their entire lives. Excelsior is very central, and easy to access all parts of the city via MUNI, BART, or driving. The park nearby is great for taking walks or walking your dog as well"
  • Trulia User
"very family friendly neighborhood, has a lot of events for kids like block parties, slow streets, games in the park. "
  • Trulia User
"There's a park just a few blocks away that allows dogs. Dogs are friendly and owners are nice. Baggies are stocked near the park restroom."
  • Trulia User
"Everyother Sunday they close down Persia St to cars for a street fair with food vendors and kids games"
  • Trulia User
"Commuting in the Excelsior is a cinch. I work in Palo Alto and I'm a 5 minute drive to 280 and a 10 minute walk to BART."
  • Trulia User
"Very multicultural , close to freeway. Convenient shopping and getting around. It feels relatively safe. "
  • Trulia User

  • Valeria C.
"Sunday Streets! Mission Street goes car-free from Silver Avenue to Geneva Avenue with free activities, cultural performances and a mile of open space for all."

"family friendly neighborhood. lots of trick-or-treating and Christmas decorating. my kids have made so many friends in the neighborhood."
  • Valeria C.
"lots of other families and kids in the neighborhood. the skate park is popular and the park is right up the hill"
  • Michelle R.
"I have lived here all of my life. Great neighborhood. I’m third generation. Parking is always bad. Lots of schools nearby. McLaren and Crocker are wonderful parks."
  • Jay S.
"This is an area verging on gentrification. It used to be primarily immigrant families with a thriving subculture of car clubs, youth motorcycle shenanigans, and there was parking. These days the houses are all being subdivided and more and more money is moving in to the neighborhood. While not necessarily a bad thing, it does mean that the neighborhood culture is changing. "
  • Blanca Z.
"is still calm and quiet. and im hoping that it doesnt get bad like geneva avenue or do to the homelessness. "
  • Hazel E.
"Public transportation and freeways are very accessible to Excelsior. There are about three different buses that run through the neighbor and reaching the freeways bot 280 and 101 are easy. Also taking the backroads are an alternative way to use instead of the freeways. "
  • Shannon
"I take transit by walking to BART or ride my bike. It takes about 30 or 40 minutes to get to downtown "
  • Wilcohkw
"Central to 280 or 101. McClaren Park Philosopher Way trail Blue water tower The Salad Place - great breakfast burrito wraps Giant raccoons and Ravens "
  • Wilcohkw
"I drive but there is access to muni everywhere and glen park / balboa Bart walking distance Easy commute to downtown or Palo Alto. Central location "
  • Aladin D.
"This area has a great park. It is relatively safe. Neighbors are super nice and everyone is just going about their own business. Our neighbor is super nice!"
  • Cristian L.
"There are weed dispensaries here. Most restaurants are 2-3 stars. Whole Foods isn’t welcomed here. Homes are close to each other. "
  • Shannon
"There are lots of dogs and McLaren park has an off leash area and is enormouenormous s and lots of people being their dogs to walk there "
  • Eric G.
"We have 2 Labrador’s and are so thankful that this is a Dog friendly neighborhood. Ours dogs love going to the park and meeting new dogs and people. "
  • Emadriz
"Not a whole lot. It is your basic working class neighborhood and is conveniently located near transportation. It isn’t the next Noe Valley. Home prices are getting higher because there isn’t enough affordable housing stock available elsewhere in the city so people are buying in the Excelsior. To be honest, nobody knows the Excelsior because it is tucked between Mission Street and McLaren Park. Anyone I talk to from outside of the district asks where is the Excelsior."
  • Desiree G.
"It’s a central neighborhood. Stores busses, schools, bart, and restaurants. It’s a busy neighborhood with lots of new and old families. My husband grew up here and now our children are too. "
  • Edward M.
"Public transportation is easy to get to. At certain times of day it could be better. Sometimes the traffic backs up, and sometimes the bus passes you by."
  • Mastrangelo_tm
"It is one of the untouched neighborhoods still remaining from all the new upgrades to SF. IMO it needs to be fixed up. "
  • Jayson J.
"There are many dog parks—little parks and big ones in the upper hills. Perfect for a good walk."
  • Jayson J.
"The commute is fast and easy. You can ride one bus through the Mission to downtown, and many lines connect close by."
  • Adlemi R.
"The commute is horrible. There are about five cars per household in the neighborhood. Everyone has a garage but doesn't use it. There are so many schools in the neighborhood, and it is congested with cars. Don't try to drive between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Excelsior."
  • Adlemi R.
"It's one of the only neighborhoods in San Francisco that hasn't been gentrified by techies. It has a lot of neighborhood schools and locally owned stores."
  • Jayson J.
"The Excelsior is unique because of its diversity. It's perfect for kids."
  • Tracie L.
"The culture and atmosphere are unique here. The neighborhood has changed over the years and grown to be self sufficient. It has become more diverse and inclusive."
  • Excelsiorian
"We are yuppies who can afford to in Pacific Heights or Nob Hill. In fact, I moved from the tony South Beach area near the AT&T Ballpark. I am so glad we bought a SFH in Excelsior instead of any other San Francisco neighborhood. We have ample space, a basement, a two car side by side garage, nice neighbors, views of the Bay, walking distance to McClaren Park, designed by the same designer of Golden Gate Park and NYC's Central Park. We have sun, space, quiet, easy access to downtown (it's closer to FiDi than Outer Sunset) and to Silicon Valley."
