"they would like the fact that McLaren Park is nearby and it is very dog friendly. they would also like the fact that most people have dogs and walk them during lunch or after work in the neighborhood, and they are mostly very well trained."

"Some area can be rough. But it is definitely getting better over the years. The only issue we have now are young kids doing donut in different intersections and loud motorbikes passing by. "

"Lived here for over 2 years now. Incredibly diverse neighborhood. Lots of families and children, many of who have lived here for their entire lives. Excelsior is very central, and easy to access all parts of the city via MUNI, BART, or driving. The park nearby is great for taking walks or walking your dog as well"

"This is an area verging on gentrification. It used to be primarily immigrant families with a thriving subculture of car clubs, youth motorcycle shenanigans, and there was parking. These days the houses are all being subdivided and more and more money is moving in to the neighborhood. While not necessarily a bad thing, it does mean that the neighborhood culture is changing. "

"Public transportation and freeways are very accessible to Excelsior. There are about three different buses that run through the neighbor and reaching the freeways bot 280 and 101 are easy. Also taking the backroads are an alternative way to use instead of the freeways. "

"Not a whole lot. It is your basic working class neighborhood and is conveniently located near transportation. It isn’t the next Noe Valley. Home prices are getting higher because there isn’t enough affordable housing stock available elsewhere in the city so people are buying in the Excelsior. To be honest, nobody knows the Excelsior because it is tucked between Mission Street and McLaren Park. Anyone I talk to from outside of the district asks where is the Excelsior."

"It’s a central neighborhood. Stores busses, schools, bart, and restaurants. It’s a busy neighborhood with lots of new and old families. My husband grew up here and now our children are too. "

"The commute is horrible. There are about five cars per household in the neighborhood. Everyone has a garage but doesn't use it. There are so many schools in the neighborhood, and it is congested with cars. Don't try to drive between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Excelsior."

"We are yuppies who can afford to in Pacific Heights or Nob Hill. In fact, I moved from the tony South Beach area near the AT&T Ballpark. I am so glad we bought a SFH in Excelsior instead of any other San Francisco neighborhood. We have ample space, a basement, a two car side by side garage, nice neighbors, views of the Bay, walking distance to McClaren Park, designed by the same designer of Golden Gate Park and NYC's Central Park. We have sun, space, quiet, easy access to downtown (it's closer to FiDi than Outer Sunset) and to Silicon Valley."

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageGood. Unfortunately, kids who require more support significantly burden the teachers ability to teach students who could otherwise thrive and excell. Smarter kids have holes in their education due to the burden of too many special needs students who require extra attention.Parent Review9y ago3 Reviews - Monroe Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAfter a horrible experience at another school for Kindergarten, we decided to move our child to Monroe for 1st grade. It has been a wild success. Our son went from regularly thinking of himself as a troublemaker and describing himself as stupid at his old school to performing well above grade level academically (in reading and math) and socially integrating within one semester to his new environment. He's even started to take on a mentorship role with some of his classmates with their schoolwork. What he really needed wasn't a more rigorous disciplinary regime, but an environment that encouraged his creativity and curiosity, a place where his energy is treated as more of an asset than a problem. It's been a great experience so far.Note: this is a review for a multiracial, already-bilingual child in the Spanish immersion program.Parent Review3y ago12 Reviews - San Francisco Community Alternative School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is honestly horrible, My daughter has been going to SFC since kindergarten, it was an amazing school at first but this new principale has changes on everything and the lunch lady likes to put her hands on my daughter and other students. The security guard is very disrespectful with students, I am working on moving my daughter to a better school, she gets bullied and comes home really upset and sometimes even crying, because the teachers give her a hard time, or because the students at this school bully her. I am so done with this school honestly I am moving my daughter out of the school and she will not be back. Please for the sake of your childs well being, dont put them in this school. And not only that but this school is extremley understaffed. The math teacher for middle schoolers is the history teacher, she doesnt know what shes doing and I want to provide my daughter a great education, so therefore I am taking her out of SFC. If you want your child to have a good education, please please I beg of you, dont bring them to sfc. This is the last place I want my daughter to be.Parent Review2y ago41 Reviews - Epiphany Elementary School
