Read what parents are saying about J. F. Kennedy Elementary SchoolOur child has been going to JFK since kindergarten and is now finishing 4th grade. He has had small (10-15) classes with caring and dedicated teachers. The administration is solid and seem to be working towards a better school for all. Sure there is always a couple disruptive kids in his class each year, but that's public school for you and it doesn't seem to detract from his ability to excel and be challenged. On the contrary, being identified as a top student and leader, he has been given many opportunities to be challenged and grow. We also love that the school is so diverse and he has friends who come from all around the world and bring their culture with them. The challenges Winooski faces are similar to many public schools across the US that serve lower income families. Parental involvement is inconsistent because many parents work off hours or are new to the country and are still finding their way in a new system. I think the school does a great job with what they have and have successful programs in place to promote diversity, mindfulness, anti-bullying, and expected behaviors. Don't let low testing scores and isolated "horror stories" scare you away from Winooski.
Posted by a parent on 5/12/2014When I worked at this school I was mortified by the bad behavior that was reinforced with positive things such as games and playing. The teachers should learn how to use the Responsive Classroom model. However, I was surprised when I asked a student to line up and he gave me the finger, while his parent was standing there. The parent did absolutely nothing to discipline the child. I told them to take a break and sit down. The parent decided this was not an appropriate response and began to argue with me. Really? Where is the teacher support? Not only were some of the parents unsupportive, but two of the first grade teachers were as well. When I began working here, these two teachers were bullying another teacher on their team. The principal was alerted to the problem, but let the bullies stay together. Her solution was to move the teacher who was bullied into another grade. There are some serious behavior issues that the principal needs to address not only with the students but with the staff. This was a horrible place to work. I would never send my kids here.
Posted by a teacher on 3/24/2014I have two children at JFK and I have been very happy. Our kids' skills are above grade level and I feel that they are adequately challenged. The teachers are very accommodating and we have had nothing but good experiences. Most importantly, our kids are happy with the school. When I have met with the administration on various parent committees, I find that they are responsive to my suggestions and appreciate my input. When I talk to my friends with kids in other school districts, I find that our experience at Winooski is similar to neighboring schools.
Posted by a parent on 2/8/2014We have two children at this school, and have generally had a positive experience. Every time I have been in my children's classrooms when school is in session, I have seen engaged children, dedicated teachers, and well managed classrooms. We do hear of occasional discipline problems, but they are a small part of our children's experience. My only complaint would be that, when our kids were in kindergarten, they had a lot of seat time and not quite enough structured play time.
Posted by a parent on 2/8/2014JFK Elementary school is a wonderfully diverse school with a very caring and supportive superintendent, principal and teachers. My son has been there for three years and we've had a very positive experience so far. The lack of parent involvement is not because of the school. They have done an incredible job of reaching out to the parents and community encouraging parent involvement and providing childcare s so parents can attend school-parent meetings/events. I think the problem is more to do with the transient population that resides in Winooski. There are some amazing, caring, well-educated & involved parents but there are also many very low income families. The racial, cultural & socio-economic differences that are present in Winooski are some of the reasons I chose to buy a home and have my child educated here. There are many intelligent & motivated students who attend JFK but parents in the community need to be more involved with their child's progress.

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageProbably an okay school if your child doesn't have a disability and/or isn't gifted. In my family's experience, the school does not support my child with a physical disability and does not challenge them or acknowledge their other gifted areas. If your child has a disability, know that you may need to fight the school at every step of the way. I would recommend not trusting that they are providing support and doing regular check ins with the teacher/school.No parking, let alone for a child and/or parent with a disability (one parallel "handicap" parking space without access to get a chair out, and that a staff member parks in). Had to carry my child down the street to get to and from school too many times. The one bright spot at this school is one of the Kindergarten teachers (Mrs. Blair) who is a gem.Other Review2y ago - Edmunds Elementary School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur daughter is in her 3rd year at IAA and we all feel that it's a great fit for her. The teachers are all very caring and creative. The school takes any issues that are important to you as a parent or important to the child seriously and works jointly to resolve any concerns/issues. The PTO is highly engaged and comes up with wonderful events for the students and families throughout the school year. We have schools that are closer to our home, but this school continues to impress us. The focus is on integrated the arts (music, dance, visual arts, drama and creative writing) in to all disciplines of learning. The students are given the opportunity to move, interact with their peers and be creative all day. If your child likes to focus quietly on a project, there is time for that as well. The Monday and Friday full school gatherings are a wonderful example of the school's energy and definitely check those out when considering this school for your child.Parent Review9y ago - International Children's School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageICS is a hidden gem! It provides the best education I know of in this area. This school offers a very high level academic curriculum in a caring atmosphere. Academics are rigorous, but taught in a way that engages students so that they own their own learning, which lets them enjoy it. Students gain independence but also learn how to collaborate effectively. The faculty is second to none. The student body is very diverse. We feel so lucky that we found this wonderful school for our daughterParent Review5y ago - St. Francis Xavier School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWith multiple children, we have been at St. Francis Xavier for many years. All of them started at age 4 in the Pre K program. It is a place that our children feel at home when they are not. All have thrived in this safe and secure school environment and were well prepared for the rigors of a preparatory high school. The teachers and administration all work together for the success of each student. The community at St. Francis is strong with participation from all families. It is a very comforting place to spend any extra hours you may have volunteering. St. Francis Xavier has a strong academic curriculum that includes Catholic faith, art, foreign language, music, STEM, digital learning and RECESS for all. We couldn't be happier to be part of this thriving school. If your child needs something more, check out this school. You will not be disappointed!Parent Review4y ago - St. Joseph School
