"I've lived in the neighborhood just over a year now, as I have walked through the neighborhood with my dog and driven through it. There is Barton Elementary school close by and the area seems pet friendly. 79th street is busy with a lot of negative activity the further east you go. However the further west you go becomes more peaceful and family oriented. There are several new shopping options like Walmart, Dollar Tree and Aldi that have opened on 76th and Ashland. The community has both homes and rental apts available, however there seems to be an uptick in rehabbed home sales that are causing the home values to significantly increase to 200k plus, several have listed for 300k that were complete rehabbed homes. The good news is younger families are moving in purchasing the rehabbed homes, and many long term residents have lived in their homes 30 plus years. Most of the blocks are quiet, you dont see gangs on the corners, nor do you see drug dealing or prostitution. the area has a city of chicago incentive zone, so many police, teachers, fireman and other city "

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe current Principal is the rudest person I've met in a long time. I have subbed here a few times and would not do it again. One time I had no sub plans, no roster, and no schedule (this happens regularly at Cook). Students were running around the building and I had no idea who was even supposed to be in my class because there was no roster. I alerted the principal that students were just roaming freely (at least 10 students) he shrugged and said he was busy. Did not care at all about where they were or their safety. The staff admits they don't like the principal at all and even apologized for his behavior. It's not the staff that's the problem, it's that principal. Morale is very low and if I had to deal with him every day I would not want to come to work either.Other Review11mo ago4 Reviews - Gresham Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have personally observed the principal, Mrs. McCarthy yelling at students about attendance as soon as they enter the doors din the morning. School staff have refused to assist and support a homeless family by denying the children, school supplies, new uniforms, and transportation assistance. They have violated a parent's right to have support available and isolated that parent while communicating with them. They have implemented an attendance incentive program that is unjust for all the students. The school staff is very concerned about attendance but do nothing to support students being able to attend everyday while students are performing very low academically.Parent Review1y ago3 Reviews - Oglesby Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageNo discipline whatsoever. Don't send your kid here. They will pick up terrible behavior. I saw the kids testing, their scores were abysmal. I guess if you live close that's a perk. Genuinely I have no clue why else you would send your kid here. Even if you live close, you should want to do better for your kid. At the end of the day they put the worst behaved class in the auditorium for hours at a time with no work and security sitting outside the door. It's literally like a holding room. They have no disciplinary methods at all. It seems like everyone on staff has just given up. Primary is not as bad as middle school. There's still typically a lot of disorganization but primary tends to have better behavior at least. Not good behavior but definitely better.Other Review11mo ago4 Reviews - Ryder Elementary Math & Sci Spec School
