"Not as many trees or grass patches for dogs to hang out at and do their business. Few places have yards so I’m guessing that’s not ideal for dogs either. "

"Walkable (or bike/scooter) to FiDi, Embarcadero, and Union Square neighborhoods, will likely need to take public transit for anything further"

"There are very few children in the neighborhood. More kids in Cow Hollow and the Marina. It’s also quite hilly so you will be pushing strollers up hill and carrying tired kids up steep streets. "

"We love our quaint community up on the hill. The coffee shops know my order, restaurant staff know us by name, we play fetch in the park with our neighbors dogs, and they play and joke with our kids. We pick up trash off the street, our neighbors sweep the sidewalk. Everyone helps out. The panoramic views of the bay and city skyline, bay lights, and historic homes make it feel like you’re in a big city, but the neighborhood makes it feel like a small town. Located centrally - easy access to restaurants, services like dry cleaning, downtown, transit, the marina, etc. we’ve lived in the marina, north beach, and soma - Russian hill is the perfect spot in the city. Oozing w character and filled with kind, familiar faces and friendly neighbors. Also it’s built on bedrock, not fill, so way safer in earthquakes."

"I've lived in the Fisherman's Wharf/lower Russian Hill area for 26 years. The scenery is beautiful-- Fort Mason, Aquatic Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Marina Blvd. Iconic Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiardelli Square are here. The SF Opera, Ballet, and Symphony Hall are reachable by bus (or foot, depending on how much one likes to walk). The area is alive, vibrant, and very convenient with several large grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, post offices, restaurants, fitness centers, and boutique stores, you name it, all within easy walking distance. Many bus lines run through the area. You don't need to have a car in this part of San Francisco. Several wonderful neighborhoods are reachable by foot, including the Marina, North Beach and Chinatown. Several good shopping districts are both walkable and also accessible by bus including Union Square, Union Street/Chestnut Street in Cow Hollow, and the Polk Street shopping district . There is a relatively smaller homeless population here, although this is an issue everywhere in the city. On the down side, there is a lot of traffic congestion, bicyclists on the walking paths, limited parking, and , overall noise and dirt. These issues have been worsening in recent years. And, there is less of an actual neighborhood feel here since we are in between established neighborhoods, and incorporate so much of the tourist area. There are few single family houses. Most of the housing consists of rent-controlled apartment buildings . As the older, long term residents die, younger people move in and out often due to the high prices of rentals. "

"If you have ever played Tony Hawk Pro Skater in your youth, you'd know this is the spot where Tony lands after the enournous ramp at the top of Lombard street (famous crooked street). This is the same hilly neighborhood where bus-fulls of tourists prowl with high-powered lenses, where the trolley sounds engulf the weekend mornings and the Italian food never does you wrong. This is a place where your corner-cafe owner knows you by name, where kids run in the morning to school and yet somehow, parking is abundant. Resident of 10yrs. "

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageYick Wo is a top-notch neighborhood school with wonderful teachers and staff, amazing academics, and an amazing PTO. The community has loads of events and fundraisers, and everyone really pitches in. The annual panda chase fundraiser, ice cream socials, and sheer number of events my kids were able to join made us instantly feel welcome. The teachers are fun and engaging (my oldest adores Ms. Lan!) and my kids have learned so much. Many kids walk to school, and its not uncommon to see families socializing outside of school. If you're looking for a school with a strong academic record, a welcoming environment, and a vibrant, engaged community, look no further!Parent Review1y ago53 Reviews - The New School of San Francisco

10/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis review is based only on our experience in the first few months of Fall 2025, since our child is a kindergartener and we are still getting to know the NSSF community and learning environment. That said, we entered with a child who had 1.5 years of pre-K under his belt but, while he could recognize letters and numbers, could not even hold a pencil properly. Fast forward just three months, and we now have a kindergartener who sings the songs he learns from class, reads, can sound out words, and can hold a pencil *and* write upper and lower case letters. He can also write his numbers. Most importantly, he gets up each day saying that he wants to go to school, which was not always or even ever the case for pre-K. He looks up to the first graders and kids in older grades, and most have been kind and nurturing (the others just neutral -- not particularly concerned with interacting with younger kids). The teachers in our class are excellent, enthusiastic, and caring. When children light up when they see their teacher, or when you see a teacher with kids surrounding them at recess eager to chat with them, those are good signs -- and that's what we see in our kinder class. Parents are also kind and inclusive. We are here bc we wanted a supportive environment for our neurodivergent kiddo and what we got is an supportive learning environment, Spanish lessons (huge perk), exposure to peers and families from other backgrounds (which is good for all of us in today's world), and a community. The community part was evident from the Halloween Maker's parade, when parents of kids from all grades and the middle schoolers made signs for the younger children and cheered them on during the parade. I saw other schools' parades that day, and the enthusiasm and love at the NSSF parade was unmatched. On learning, the curriculum is not easy. They are already onto subtraction and we are 3 mos into kinder. Our child's teacher sends worksheets home in the kids' backpack for them to practice at home. Our child is proud of himself when he learns and masters something new that he learned in class. On extras, we are just in kinder but he already has a P.E. teacher, Spanish teacher, music teacher, and art teacher, who meet with the class daily / weekly.Parent Review6mo ago47 Reviews - Cooper (Sarah B.)
