What Locals Say about Howard Beach

  • Trulia User
"Halloween parades, Columbus Day parades, Christmas Parades, great place to live! It is a very safe place to live. It has the Long Island feel with in Queens. It is a commuters dream. Whether you are traveling for business (JFK is close by) or communicating to NYC for work, public transportation with QM15, QM16, QM17 Q52 or Q53 to Subway, the bus lanes have shortened the commute to NYC. Great restaurants and takeout close by. Kids are able to still be kids here as the sports programs are great!"

"In Old Howard and Hamilton Beach there is barely any sidewalks, at night it is very poorly lit and houses are not maintained very well."

"It is along Hawtree Creek which was likely beautiful and clean 80+ years ago, but it is now filthy and polluted and smells awful at low tide. The coolest thing about here are the non-native Monk parakeets that live here each spring and summer. They are native to South America and no one really knows how they came to live here. They make tremendous nests on the electrical poles and lines. I love them. But be careful as you walk looking up at them because you will likely step in dog poo because no one picks up. We also have a couple of swans in the creek. "

"I’ve lived here for 5 years and everyone is very friendly and the schools are amazing as well. There a lot of places to eat in the area. The commute into the city is fast and Howard beach is close to the airport and many places to shop. Less than a 5 minute drive to multiple stores, restaurants, and supermarkets. Neighbors treat each other like family and we look out for each other. "

"Ive lived in this neighborhood for 4 years and what makes this neighborhood unique is its location. It is close to transportation and has walking distance supermarket, banks, restaurant, pharmacy, cafe, liquor store and more everything you need in one location. School and park are also walking distance as well as religious buildings. It is away from the traffic noise but near the belt pkwy which 5 minutes away in car is the Gateway Center. Having access to all the necessities is a turn key for me."

"The neighborhood has changed drastically, Howard Beach is not Howard beach anymore. Neighbors are moving out East or to the Hudson valley or out of state. Coastal flooding is a concern, and it’s priced the cheapest in Queens as a hole. Crime has risen, which never existed. "

"I grew up in Howard Beach my hole life. my family still lives there (parents) the neighborhood is still decent compared to others. but in all reality it is not the Howard Beach I grew up in. Like all neighborhoods in the city , it has become more diverse. My generation has moved east or north or out of state, but by no means, it is still a good neighborhood, "
