Read what parents are saying about Highland Park Elementary SchoolWhile the principal is competent and highly responsive, there is a culture of toxic positivity from the top that trickles down to almost everyone. If you question how things are done or why, you are often passive aggressively shamed or gaslighted. Some teachers are stellar, others are average, and some are pretty terrible. Your experience each year largely depends on the teacher you are assigned to. The school is very old and AISD chose not to include it in the 2022 bond due to "equity" (after Doss and Casis were already redone with previous bond money). Due to the age, the community spaces are too small, there are rodents present, and the safety is questionable at best. There is a ton of parent support via both time and money, and that allows the school to offer opportunities and resources that would otherwise not be available at an AISD school.
Posted by a parent on 11/29/2023We have been at HP for 6 years with 2 kids. I think the best part about HP is the leadership, the Principal truly cares and is very competent and it trickles down. We had one instance where a kid was being slightly bullied (very minor) and we requested a meeting and the response was very impressive. The PTA and parent support is outstanding.Public schools are hard, there are many challenges. I think that became more evident after COVID. This school is as well run and cared for as I think anyone can possibly hope for. There are even a fair number of alum who now teach there! The only knock on it is the age and condition of the school itself.
Posted by a parent on 11/9/2023I most agree with the latest review. I am not surprised there are some glowing reviews because the PTA moms are in deep with the school and their kids get choice teachers and choice treatment. Each grade we’ve gone through has a mixed bag of great to really rude teachers. The students are entitled. As noted in one review, bullying is tolerated and hardly handled from what I can tell. We are considering moving next year, which is a shame because we lived in this neighborhood for the elementary school. I wonder if things have just recently gone downhill or if the student population and parents have changed since covid. Not friendly. Oh and I know of several parents who say 504 plans barely looked at or enforced. This matters to us because we may have one by summer from our child.
Posted by a parent on 2/13/2023Great community of teachers and educators. Parents are highly involved and contribute positively to the school by creating additional resources. A great learning environment for all kids from high performing to those who need more assistance. Feels like the level of attention you would get at a private school, but brings the benefit of the diversity and resources of a public school.
Posted by a parent on 8/22/2019As I've stated in the other sections, this school has been truly transformative for my bright daughter. My son just began here, and we are nothing but hopeful and expectant of amazing experiences for him as well.

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe have been at Bryker Woods for 3 years now and could not be happier with our decision to transfer in. A sweet, loving, supportive community where every child thrives. The smaller size of the student body enables teachers to focus on each child and for the children to feel that they belong to something special. Truly incredible and dedicated teachers that making learning fun, engaging, challenging and exciting. Love love love our school!Parent Review1mo ago - Casis Elementary School

10/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe facility is new and beautiful! People seem so happy going in and out. We have two children having two different experiences. The 1st grade teacher is enthusiastic about her work and seems well trained and prepared. She can speak to specific strengths and weaknesses of our kiddo. Our student is making great strides and is engaged with his learning in positive, goal attaining ways. The class seems bonded and they enjoy eachother. In contrast, our 3rd grader has changed from an engaged student, conversational about topics discussed in class, to a bored kid who went so far as to say they “don’t care anymore”. Classroom management is an issue & reveals a lack of training and maturity (Pointedly using girls to tattle on the boys, assigning seats next to girls as a punishment) We’ve noticed that they haven’t bonded with any adults at the school and even we, successful adults in our professional lives, have trouble meaningfully communicating with faculty. If we struggle and we’re experienced, it feels almost futile for a 3rd grader. Many parents have told us that the 3rd grade teachers have a history of being this way, and that 4th grade is much better. We look forward to next year and a fresh start! Campus leadership is charming and energetic in group/public settings and says all the right things but our individual interactions with leadership have been curt and condescending. Shockingly so. Not, “Oh he’s busy and under a lot of pressure”, more making a point to be unwelcoming and dismissive. I’ve observed an unfortunate dynamic with students. Leadership is either bubbling with positivity or barking orders. But many people adore leadership. Support for him is strong. It’s honestly very confusing. What did we do? Was our PTA donation too small? Do they dislike us?To my knowledge the school does not use corporal punishment, however they do use physical correction. They do grab students by the arm, etc. My spouse observed a teacher do this in line outside. He couldn’t figure out what the child had done. I observed the principal do it to a child in line in the cafeteria who wasn’t facing forward. It was all very public with witnesses, so clearly an accepted part of the culture of the school. Everybody told us how much we would love the school, so in many ways I’m deeply disappointed, on the other hand, it could be worse. And we are fortunate that the student body is solid with involved parents and that the facility and grounds are lovely.Parent Review1mo ago - Doss Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageHappy, positive climate. This school teaches so much more than the basics, and there are plenty of optional clubs, contests, and after school activities. The teachers are nothing short of phenomenal and most are very experienced--- and fun and kind to boot. Lots of opportunities for parents to be involved; staff are warm and welcoming of parental involvement.Parent Review1y ago - Gullett Elementary School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI can't say enough good things about Gullett. The entire experience is one of engagement and togetherness. My kids love it. The teachers are, shockingly, happy and engaged as well. I feel lucky we found it and lucky our kids get to go there.Parent Review1mo ago - Rosedale

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is wonderful. I'm glad we found this school for my child. She's been moving through some tough home life situations, and they have been encouraging and understanding without babying here. This school you DO have to work to complete the work. This is a type of work ethic not needed at other schools, but they are skills that will sustain the children throughout life. The kids are no longer able to dominate and skate by.I see some of the other reviews have complaints over the work, and it can be significant, but it is a growth opportunity for the kids. There is still plenty of time to play and be goofy kids.Parent Review1y ago
