As a former student, I loved going to Bryker Woods, and had many great years. I loved the environment and I had some great friends. It was ideal that BW is a small school; only a few hundred students attend. I enjoyed many years here, but I also did not enjoy some years here. When I was in 4th grade, I was bullied by practically every single one of my friends and I hated going to school. Even at 10 years old, I became depressed and I came to school and watched my former best friends turn on me, and they bullied me. The school did not do much about the bullying, and the teachers didn’t seem to care. Now, Bryker Woods has a new principal, and I think that the new principal does a much better job than the one who was there when I was. To make matters worse, once I started middle school, I realized that I didn’t know nearly as much as my classmates. Specifically math. I didn’t know much math at all, and I realized it was because of my Bryker Woods experience. In 4th and 5th grade, the teachers didn’t teach very much about math and I had many gaps in my math skills. It’s taken me years to catch up to all the information I missed. The learning styles they teach are very generic; not many interactive activities, and very many worksheets. Though I was always one of the smartest kids in the class, I noticed that teachers rarely made time to help students who were struggling. But back to all the positive aspects of the school, I enjoyed going there. I loved Bryker Woods, but it’s taken me years to figure out that I am not as smart as my classmates now since I wasn’t taught as much as my current friends were in elementary.

One of the worst schools we’ve been at that is horribly classist. The PTA is relentless and hosts bottom barrel events that are not inclusive ($50 tickets for 1 kid?). They don’t care if a student is academically behind until it’s testing time in which they give tutoring until testing is done. They turn a blind eye to bullying and don’t alert parents when something cautionary is going on— if a child is defending themselves or “snaps” that child is punished instead without looking into the situation. My child completely changed while at this school with aggression and depression. The pick-up/drop off is also very dangerous— it’s sort-of controlled by 5th or 6th grade that love to be distracted and talk with their friends and then you have parents parking their cars in the circular no parking zone and blocking the ability to pick up children. It’s also free and open access for children to walk off in any which direction which is scary since it backs up to parks and really busy streets.

I think it’s for sure not the worse school in our town... maybe even one of the best in town. And that’s why we are moving out of town.

It's extremely disappointing to spend so much on housing just have to end up going to private school. In fact, there are 12 elementary aged kids on my block in Bryker Woods and those 12 kids represent 5 private schools and only 2 of the kids go to BWE. The parents of kids at the school are rather involved and carry A LOT of the weight of the school. I think a lot of the kids are actually wonderful kids too, though there is some bullying that gets very over looked. There is very little communication between teacher parent unless you really bug them about it. I was really unhappy with my child's kinder and 1st grade teachers. I am so grateful he finally got picked by lottery into a charter for 2nd.

This was the most depressing year for my little boy. He went from a happy-go-lucky kid to a sad defeated kid. We literally are moving this summer so we can get into a better elementary school next year. We gave it all we could... volunteering, donating to PTA, being involved in activities. It just was not a great environment for him... probably any child... actually they need to just learn how to treat humans and they might be a much better school.
