"If you’re a highland park native then you know we are surrounded by 2 gangs it used to be 3. Dont be too freely into thinking you can do what you want and talk crazy to anyone here because it doesnt end up nice. Shootings still occur even if its gentrified enough. Be cautious, be alert and mind your business."

"Highland park is a mix of retro and modern. Lots of cute fun bars and restaurants. Some tailored to OG locals and some tailored to new hipsters. Overall a great feel. Lots of good food. Mostly quiet even with the bars. "

"Illegal fireworks set off by residents for May, June and July make the gunshots less noticeable. Great farmers market every Tuesday afternoon. "

"I lot of bars and restaurants in the area. Everything close together. Nice big park and dog parks near by. Rent is not too expensive. A lot of trees around the area. Feels very comfortable. You can walk to bars and restaurants too. "

"It has less congestion than the west side during the day especially rush hour. Therefore I tend to stay in this neighborhood and continue to make it feel more like home. "

"The anual parades, Christmas and car shows, the farmers markets. Annual music events. Need to have a 4th of July fireworks show"

"There are sidewalks. However, many dog owners leave their dogs in their front fenced yards which leaves them overly aggressive & can be quite uncomfortable when walking your dogs, especially if you have small dogs and a huge aggressive pit bull tries to jump through their fence. I see why the neighborhood has received the nickname “Highland Bark.” While this treatment of dogs is inhumane, it also lends to an uncomfortable stroll with your furry friends. In addition, apparently “illegal” doesn’t seem to apply to fireworks in this neighborhood. They’re pretty much a year round event here and several months leading into July you’ll hear nightly fireworks which traumatize most dogs. Just being real. This isn’t an ideal dog neighborhood unless you don’t care about your dog. "

"People don’t pick up after their dogs and it’s upsetting as it’s such a great neighborhood. Some people have their dogs sleep outside which you can hear barking. "

"The local artists’ events are what really make it special...from No WiFi at the Hi Hat or mariachi music at the first Friday art fair. It’s especially fun when the Bob Baker puppeteers bring their marionettes across the street to the park for the kids to enjoy."

"We love our city of Highland Park, location is best to everything. If you need Downtown 10 minutes, next to Pasadena, Glendale. You want Beaches 30 minute drive. Thinking mountains for skiing, 1 hour away. This is the best location close to everything!"

"I work in Pasadena and live in the Garvanza area of HP. I primarily drive, but have walked to the Gold Line stop (about 1 mile from where I live) to work and biked. My husband sometimes works downtown. His commute is 40 min during rush hour, 20-25 outside of rush hour."

NAGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThings have changed since the new principle took over a few years ago. The website is incredibly misleading, and outdated. There are only 3 teachers employed to teach grades kindergarten-8th. The principle refuses to fill the open teaching positions claiming that there is no room in the budget for the expense due to the schools “tuition-based” funding model. What exactly the tuition is spent on remains unclear. In terms of grade level standards- 6-8th grade science and math is a critical component students should have a solid grasp on / mastery of prior to beginning high school- this is an incredibly undervalued aspect of middle school that Good Shepard overlooks and undervalues failing to invest funding in preparing middle schoolers for high school educational standards or applying to HS with highly competitive science/math programsThere is no technology/STEM learning to supplement the curriculum which is centric on print out worksheets that the students spend the entire school-day working on, the playground equipment hasn’t been updated since installed - there are no afterschool activities/programs (website is outdated) the principle openly complains about the low enrollment numbers and high un-enrollment of students. The only classroom that is growing is preschool with the remaining students steadily decreasing in numbers. The principle fails to recognize that this is due to her lack of investment in school programming, and cutting expenses from teachers payroll and quality of education - the principle has deemed herself qualified to teach math to the upper class students, and has expressed no intent on seeking out qualified teachers to take over the teaching positions she’s employed herself to fill while also employed as the only office administrator/ principle/ math teacher Currently - to accommodate Principle Irma’s poor fiscal management, the entire student body is grouped by convenience, grades are lumped together and classes grew from 5 students to 12/15 and include a wide range of ages and grades. The entire school is structured around the lack of teachers - an issue that the principal has expressed no intent on addressing or improving. The academic curriculum is painfully outdated, Students daily schedule is spent in the classroom doing worksheets (no new textbooks or computers) .Other Review1y ago15 Reviews
