"Very walkable neighborhood and great way to use public transit. Great coffee shops, bars, and restaurants."
  • Trulia User
"This neighborhood is very convenient and is close to Chinatown, Polk Street, North Beach, Marina, and the Financial District. Weather is considered good compared to other parts in the city. "
  • Trulia User
"Yes, Washington square park is great for dogs. Always lots of dogs there! Dogs are allowed off leash."
  • Alexander.wittkowski
"Bus stop right in front of house. Subway, however is a 20 min walk. Overall, no issues to get round."
  • Michael C.
"Made lots to f friends thru my dog and often chat with other dog owners. Dog parks nearby and lots of businesses welcome dogs"
  • Ethan L.
"Nice parks. Clean neighborhood. Safe for kids. Schools within 1.5 miles. Very small amount of homeless and everyone is incredibly nice and respectful."
  • Alexandra A.
"Not as many trees or grass patches for dogs to hang out at and do their business. Few places have yards so I’m guessing that’s not ideal for dogs either. "
  • William.byrne.iv
"Lots of friendly dogs in the neighborhood with great owners. Many parks near by and most restaurants have outdoor seating for dogs"
  • Andrea.ruckriegel
"Walkable (or bike/scooter) to FiDi, Embarcadero, and Union Square neighborhoods, will likely need to take public transit for anything further"
  • Paul.cecconi
"Easy bus access to and from the financial district. I either take the 30 or the 45. I rarely have to wait for a bus. "
  • Marcus H.
"A lot of hot spots are walkable. Very central to many eateries. The people a very friendly but also mind their own. "
  • Mark K.
"There are very few children in the neighborhood. More kids in Cow Hollow and the Marina. It’s also quite hilly so you will be pushing strollers up hill and carrying tired kids up steep streets. "
  • Gramana
"Halloween on Leavenworth, Italian Heritage Parade, North Beach Farmers Market, Fleet Week, neighborhood cleanups"
  • June_love1
"Friendly neighborhood. Lot with other dog owners walking dogs with leash or without leash. There is a dog park nearby."
  • M.
"Easy commute to the Financial District, especially for market hours. A quick zip to 101 of you beat rush hour! It’s not bad at all"
  • Amanda V.
"I’ve lived here for 4 and a half years. I love being walking distance from almost anything I want or need and always feel safe walking alone. "
  • Stephanie J.
"There are families in our neighborhood. Close to 4 different parks within 15 minutes walking distance. Close to 2 libraries with toddler tales and rhyme time."
  • Trev
"We have a very lively neighborhood! I live in Russian Hill right next to Polk street and love to go to the nearby restaurants and bars with friends."
  • Fieldsy68
"Buses are close and regular. Otherwise cable car is a fun alternative. Chariot also goes along Union. "
  • Brian Sloss
"I've lived in the neighborhood twice in the last ten years. It's great. Walking distance to down town and has great restaurants in the neighborhood."
  • Sj T.
"15ish minute walk to fort mason, Alice marbles has a decent area for dogs. I wish there were more trash cabs "
  • Katherinesteitz
"After living here for 8 years, I only began to understand the community when my son began kindergarten at the public neighborhood elementary school... and I am so grateful for this! "
  • Cori K.
"It is difficult to find an apartment that allows dogs in Russian Hill. However, there are still a lot of dogs in the neighborhood."
  • Nat M.
"There are many dogs in the neighborhood. It's got some hills but also flat areas. There is a dog park close by and some great pet stores."
  • Cori K.
"It is rather tricky by car, as finding a parking spot is difficult. However, there are many bus options."
  • Cori K.
"We have a good mix of young and old. The shopping and restaurants are unique and interesting. And there are many good restaurants all along Polk Street."
  • Nat M.
"Russian Hill is home to many family owned businesses and restaurants. It feels safe and has a sense of community."
  • Nat M.
"It's safe and family friendly as well as pet friendly."
  • Cori K.
"I have lived here for years and find it to be a very safe neighborhood. Polk Street is very family friendly during the day and there are nearby parks."
  • Bill G.
"There are lots of very annoying Yuppies in this part of town and I hate them. Parking is impossible. There are seemingly endless street construction projects that make both walking and driving difficult."
  • Mindy L.
"Walking is really the only way. There is Muni, but it's not great."
  • Ryan Y.
"It is quiet and quaint and a very nice place to live—and it has some great places to eat."
  • Ryan Y.
"It's relaxing and has a lot of good schools."
  • Christine C.
"Its views are primarily what make it unique, but also its location. It's close to downtown, the bay/wharf and several shopping areas."
  • Christine C.
"It has a great elementary school, at least a couple well-maintained parks, a library branch close by, and great access to public transportation."
  • Allie E.
"We love our quaint community up on the hill. The coffee shops know my order, restaurant staff know us by name, we play fetch in the park with our neighbors dogs, and they play and joke with our kids. We pick up trash off the street, our neighbors sweep the sidewalk. Everyone helps out. The panoramic views of the bay and city skyline, bay lights, and historic homes make it feel like you’re in a big city, but the neighborhood makes it feel like a small town. Located centrally - easy access to restaurants, services like dry cleaning, downtown, transit, the marina, etc. we’ve lived in the marina, north beach, and soma - Russian hill is the perfect spot in the city. Oozing w character and filled with kind, familiar faces and friendly neighbors. Also it’s built on bedrock, not fill, so way safer in earthquakes."
  • Jeff f.
"Russian Hill is home to some of the best views in the city. While being a stones throw to North Beach, it is the perfect neighborhood in SF."
  • Andrea r.
"I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 4 years....it’s very safe and great for young couples. There are bars, restaurants, parks, and beautiful scenery all within walking distance"
  • Pat D.
"I've lived in the Fisherman's Wharf/lower Russian Hill area for 26 years. The scenery is beautiful-- Fort Mason, Aquatic Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Marina Blvd. Iconic Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiardelli Square are here. The SF Opera, Ballet, and Symphony Hall are reachable by bus (or foot, depending on how much one likes to walk). The area is alive, vibrant, and very convenient with several large grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, post offices, restaurants, fitness centers, and boutique stores, you name it, all within easy walking distance. Many bus lines run through the area. You don't need to have a car in this part of San Francisco. Several wonderful neighborhoods are reachable by foot, including the Marina, North Beach and Chinatown. Several good shopping districts are both walkable and also accessible by bus including Union Square, Union Street/Chestnut Street in Cow Hollow, and the Polk Street shopping district . There is a relatively smaller homeless population here, although this is an issue everywhere in the city. On the down side, there is a lot of traffic congestion, bicyclists on the walking paths, limited parking, and , overall noise and dirt. These issues have been worsening in recent years. And, there is less of an actual neighborhood feel here since we are in between established neighborhoods, and incorporate so much of the tourist area. There are few single family houses. Most of the housing consists of rent-controlled apartment buildings . As the older, long term residents die, younger people move in and out often due to the high prices of rentals. "
  • Oleg S.
"If you have ever played Tony Hawk Pro Skater in your youth, you'd know this is the spot where Tony lands after the enournous ramp at the top of Lombard street (famous crooked street). This is the same hilly neighborhood where bus-fulls of tourists prowl with high-powered lenses, where the trolley sounds engulf the weekend mornings and the Italian food never does you wrong. This is a place where your corner-cafe owner knows you by name, where kids run in the morning to school and yet somehow, parking is abundant. Resident of 10yrs. "
