"There is a high school next door and the neighborhood is always very lively. Not a ton of specific events that are thrown, but great city "
  • Trulia User
"Most people have their dogs on a leash but a few dogs are leash less. A lot of older folks have lived here a long time including myself. "
  • Trulia User
"Commute sucks. This is Austin, get used to it. Luckily my commute is about 30 minutes................."
  • Luis M.
"Great neighborhood and place to grow up in for the Kiddos! Love my neighbors. Love that we’re just a stone throw away from Travis heights and downtown but at a fraction of the price. "
  • Vic M.
"Tons of dogs around, sidewalks in most areas, and not much traffic anywhere............................."
  • Lilsweetjenni
"This is an older neighborhood in Austin so you won't have all the bells and whistles like a community pool, playground, etc but the best part of that is you also won't have an HOA breathing down your neck. You are free to paint your house whatever color you want, let your grass grow and have chickens if you so choose. People mostly mind their own business but as neighbors we are tight and lend a helping hand if needed. One woman has given us a key to her backyard so we can use her pool for years. The only community event I know of is an annual garage sale. I think I remember some kind of neighborhood party last year but I don't go to those sorts of things. We are an old south Austin neighborhood that has managed to keep the old Austin beliefs around. The schools aren't great but what can you do?"
  • Mjfear
"Garrison city park is across the street. Big swimming pool and play areas. Good bus service. Safe streets. "
  • JTPolk
"Close to downtown and ready access to supermarkets, libraries, coffeehouses, bookstores, and quick drive down Lamar to downtown. "
  • Austin H.
"There are plenty of people who have dogs so it is a very dog friendly area as well with plenty of sidewalks to walk them on."
  • Lilsweetjenni
"lots of families, pets, park. old school Austin neighborhood where tech yuppies haven't invaded too much"
  • Lilsweetjenni
" very friendly dog neighborhood.sometimes even off the leash but please pick up poop. most dogs are known to neighbors and get lots of petting if allowable "
  • Lilsweetjenni
"Many many dogs in the area but most are indoor dogs. Owners walk their fur babies at all times day and night in the neighborhood and sometimes people even let their dogs off the leash. Garrison Park is across the street with lots of room for dogs "
  • Soulshinephotography
"It’s an established, quiet neighborhood. People are friendly and look out for one another. Low noise"
  • Michael s.
"Rush hour traffic can be frustrating, a few intersections get congested, but in general traffic is relatively light, especially for Austin"
  • Jtpolk
"Sunset Valley wilderness area with trails, to West of neighborhood. Bowling lanes at Westgate and William Cannon. Easy driving to grocery stores: HEB, Sprouts, Randalls, Whole Foods, Costco. Barnes & Noble bookstore in Sunset Valleys shopping Center. "
  • Tyler C.
"This neighborhood feels like what Austin used to be. It’s laid back, quiet, and funky. But it isn’t trying to be. It just... is."
  • Kay P.
"There are lots of dogs here."
  • Karen H.
"There are dogs everywhere. They get loose a lot and can be aggressive."
  • Karen H.
"It has a rural feeling while still being very close to downtown. Some neighbors have chickens, goats, and horses."
  • Peggy D.
"Garrison Pool, in Garrison Park, is great. It's well maintained and has swimming lessons and other activities. There are great restaurants close to Garrison Park, too, so it's easy for older children to make a day there and feel safe."
  • Kay P.
"I live across from Garrison Park, where my children took swim lessons and where we have walked the paths for many years. This is old South Austin, not fancy yet not low-class. We are proud of our area, and most folks have no interest in moving out."
  • Karen H.
"I drive about 15 minutes, maybe 20, in traffic to get to my job in South Austin. Not bad at all. We're very centrally located."
  • Kay P.
"We are only 8 miles from the University of Texas and downtown area. Yes, it is crowded, but doable. It is going to get worse as development along Manchaca Road continues, which concerns me."
  • Kay P.
"Garrison Park is a safe and wonderful park. It is crowded at times, but if you use the park as a family and raise your kids exposed to all it has to offer the kids will benefit."
  • Karen H.
"The schools aren't the greatest, but that's all of Austin unless you're wealthy."
  • Annie N. J.
"We have lived in Independence Park for 6 years. Everyone comments on how adorable it is. We have Christmas decoration competitions, block parties and a community gardening club "
  • 4swell
"Area is great, easy access to all the makes Austin a great place to live."
  • Charles R.
"the area is very up and coming. sure, it doesn't have a wine bar that is a walkable distance but it's so close to westgate village and even south park meadows which both have local favorites like hyde park grille, madam mam's, amy's ice cream. "
