If admin sets the tone for a school, then this school is not a welcoming place for young people, especially those of color.

Horrifying. Kids with severe learning disabilities not separated from other students, thus constantly disrupting the class and not affording those students the teaching they need. A counselor in a classroom, students distracting with profanity outbursts and running out of classrooms yelling "I want to go home" This is just the first three months of school. Also, my child has had homework twice this year. Twice. I verified and there is no homework, and when it is given ( 2 times) it is ridiculous how low a bar this school sets for its children. It is impossible to learn with children with disabilities constantly distracting the class. Bringing a counselor in the classroom only creates more distraction. I took my child here because we HAD to. But i am looking in to moving just to get another school, this has been an absolutely heart breaking experience. DO NOT SEND YOUR KID TO THIS SCHOOL if you value their education.

As a parent of a current student that goes here, please do not send your kids here. The principal is so rude and doesn't listen to the kids, often telling them to shut up. It is so disrespectful and unfair to the children at this school. Children get suspended for false accusations all the time and the teaching is mediocre at best. The only good teacher for my student was the science teacher, who actually cares about the students learning and about the student. I feel that my child is unprepared for high school because of the bad quality teaching.

We’ve been incredibly impressed with this school since moving to the neighborhood. The staff is attentive, communicative, and truly invested in each child's growth. The principal sets a strong tone for academic excellence while still creating a warm, welcoming environment. The teachers go above and beyond, and the small class sizes mean students get real attention.What stands out most is the sense of community — it’s the kind of school where parents know each other, teachers know the kids by name (even outside their grade), and the PTA is very active. There’s also a strong emphasis on reading, STEM, and character-building — not to mention the school grounds are always clean and well-maintained.We've seen noticeable improvement in the school's overall performance year after year. It’s definitely one of the top reasons young families are moving into the area.

Our experience at SJRCS was positive until we discovered that our child's learning disability and need for additional reading support had not been identified. Once we raised our concerns, we felt the administration and teacher were unable to provide the level of support or resources needed to help our child make progress toward grade-level reading. We were informed that the school did not have the resources to meet our child's educational needs, which ultimately led us to transfer schools in the middle of the school year. Based on our experience, families whose children require specialized learning support or significant reading intervention may want to carefully consider whether SJRCS has the resources that will meet their child's needs.
