I have been going to McDowell since pre k and its ok. the Montessori part of this school Is pretty good until upper elementary because it was not really needed but we still had to use it. also in upper ell we had to do work but none of that was preparing us for middle school. the middle school is

The majority of my teachers did encourage to learn and at least twice a week they would give us lessons. Though with all that said it didn't prepare at all for middle school. Posted by a student on 3/17/2026This is the absolute worst school. The kids get to PICK what they want to do daily. If they don’t want to do any work the teachers DO NOT push them to do anything!! Valencia Traylor is the worst teacher in MPS.
Posted by a parent on 2/16/2026Both of my children have gone here since K3 and are now in high school. They have had excellent teachers and non-educational offerings throughout. They've really enjoyed their time at MacDowell and are excelling educationally.

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy grandson has gone to this school from k5 - 2 grade. We pulled him out for 3rd grade because bullying and some health issues. He was was home schooled and we decided to put him back into this school for 4th grade and it was the worst thing we could have done for him. The bullying was everyday by a few kids. He was called names, hit, and humiliatorizated and no punishment for the boys that were constantly doing it. Going to school everyday was like torture for him. We of course notified the school constantly, but nothing changed or got better. They did nothing . My daughter and I went to speak with the teacher as we were picking up my grandson earlier. When the can into the hallway she started yelling at my grandson and i told her to stop yelling at him. Then she started yelling at me and she had her hands clinched into a fest. I wouldn't recommend this school for anyone that is even considering sending their children to this school. Shame on Hawley for not doing anything about the bullying!
