Wetmore Elementary School

The principal, teachers and staff did not care that my daughter was being bullied. I thought schools had a no bullying policy. My daughter was bullied by the same group of girls for 2 years, from first to third grade. Numerous talks to the principal and teachers were the same. "We have talked to the students." And...that's it? These girls had their friends and a boy corner her in the playground and were pushing her, pulling her hair and calling her names. My daughter finally stood up for herself and she is the one that gets in trouble? After two years and numerous reports my daughter was the only one reprimanded. Her teacher even told her she was the bully, which infuriated me. I withdrew her immediately after that incident and have home schooled her since. This is appalling and unacceptable.

My younger sibling went to this school from kindergarten to second grade and had a horrible experience. The school doesn't take bullying seriously. There were multiple occasions where my younger sibling was bullied, not just emotionally but also physically. It's outraging. The teachers participate in bullying as well. The principal doesn't support students. When my sibling spoke up about a teacher bullying them, the principal screamed at them and moved them to another class. The principal should be ashamed of herself. I don't recommend this school whatsoever. I'm so glad my sibling is moving.

My family was treated poorly here due to our race and sexual orientation.

I have had to move around quite a bit and, as a result, have had experiences with many schools in this city. The staff have been highly communicative about my child's performance as well as the more in-depth areas where she struggles. In a collaborative effort between myself and her teachers, my child has jumped three grade levels in her reading performance in the one year she has been here. I've noticed that some schools that turn out high-achieving students only seem to focus their attention on children that are already high-achievers so my daughter consistently fell through the cracks. The teachers here have collaborated with me and have come up with their own strategies to help my own struggling child grow while also telling me when my child has worked especially hard or achieved a learning milestone. I expect that by the end of this upcoming school my child will have completely caught up to her peers. They've pushed her to excel without making her miserable. She has looked forward to returning to school all summer. My only regret is that this will be her last year with them as she moves on to middle school.

I hate to post a bad review of this school, hopefully in the future it will change, and I can update it but for now it's accurate. I learned of a child in my daughter's kindergarten class who at the beginning of the year was having difficult behavior (kicking, hitting the teacher). I thought it was merely an isolated incident. Unfortunately, I didn't find out the extent until last week when this same student threw a chair in class which grazed my daughter on the side of her head. I received a call from the nurse and of course asked her teacher about it later. I reached out to other parents who have children in the same grade, some in her class, others in another teacher's class and that's when I found out this student has been terrorizing and abusing the children all through the school year. He has hit & kicked other children, stabbed the teacher with a pencil and yet is allowed to remain in class. Granted there was another principal who has since been removed but even with our recent meeting with the acting principal the attitude seems to be the same. They have confirmed the district has sent specialists to help. I have had lunch with my daughter and can confirm there are additional people around him now although I am still at a lack of words that there were no consequences for his behavior. I was also made aware (via other parents) that a second student in one of the other kindergarten classes exhibits the same behavior and is apparently related to the child in my daughter's class. I cannot confirm if he is also receiving assistance from other faculty although when I went to have lunch with my daughter, I personally saw him get away from a teacher, knock down a flagpole & then go behind some children & raise his hand to hit them. He was stopped prior to being able to although to me as a parent that is completely unacceptable behavior and how this child is still allowed to be in school is beyond me. Since there was no empathy or support from the leadership at the school we have started looking into options so that our daughter will not attend next year. I hope by posting this review it helps other parents to know what is happening at Longs Creek. I was in the dark until an incident happened, and it seems it will obviously take a child being seriously injured before they bother taking true action.

Do not chose this school, as they will put the needs of children that have family members who put donations in to put there child first, or if you are a waiting list like we were for 4+ years. Its based on a winning lottery number to have your child be accepted into this school. Dont waste your time with this
