Harmony Science Academy - Leander

I have three children who have attended Pleasant Hill. This is our 8th year of having at least one child there. Overall Pleasant Hill is great. Two of my children have received extra services and testing for disabilities and I’ve been very happy with the staff and how they’ve helped my students with these hurdles. Very happy to be at Pleasant Hill.

I will be updating this review as time progresses. Teachers YELLING at a 6yr old is UNACCEPTABLE.

Reading these reviews I feel like I’m looking at a completely different school from the experience that my girls have had here. We have had great teachers, felt supported when the odd occurrences happen concerning other kid’s behavior. I try to stay involved as much as possible in my children’s learning and maybe that’s a difference as well as having no special needs kids to deal with. We love Camacho Elementary. The only thing that is off is that there is not a lot of parental engagement there compared to where my older kids went. Maybe it more parents get involved and support the school they will have a better outcome.

My son has been at Akin since Kindergarten. and now he's going into 4th grade. All the teachers have been excellent. My son told me yesterday there is zero bullying at akin and whenever he sees bullying on a TV show, or a YouTube video, he always thinks about having never seen anything like that at Akin. I thought that was really impressive! The teachers work with each kid on what they need, even despite having a class full of children. My child has always felt safe and cared for by his teachers and the other staff (principals, admin, counselor, nurse, etc.), despite having some anxiety issues I always worried about with him being away from us. They really take care of his physical as well as emotional well-being.The only complaint he's had is that he gets bored and feels like the learning is too slow, he feels like he only spends 20 minutes learning and the rest "being bored." That is probably more just a downfall of school in general since it's a class full of children and everyone has to learn all the things each lesson, so I don't blame the school for that, I don't think. It's been a wonderful school for our child, and our youngest one enters Kindergarten there next year and we all think she will love school!

The school doesn't know how to support more advanced students. Over the past two years, almost all of the Asian families have moved to Harmony or BASIS because the level of education here is disappointing. Teachers often hold advanced students back by telling them not to answer questions, not to answer first, or otherwise stay quiet instead of engaging them with material that matches their abilities.Parents who are mindful of screen time should also be aware that there is a lot of it here. Even Physical Education relies on the notoriously low-quality videos from Coach Corey Martin's YouTube channel, so children end up staring at a screen even during the time they should be getting real physical activity. With all that said, your child deserves better than this.
