Read what parents are saying about Basic Academy of Int'l Studies High SchoolHonestly, I'm a senior here and I've been with this school since freshman year and I've got some things to say. The schools "block schedule" is pretty long and it gives the students the mindset of the fact that they can't complete work in a 30-40 min period and need an hour and 20 mins to do a thing. The lunch sizes are more for a 2nd grader, we're teens we need more fuel than a 8 year old. I did notice I was able to wear my hat without getting in trouble, but never told us why that changed. I do remember there was a hard lockdown all over a food fight and I don't think anyone thought there was a food fight. They used to have a phone policy, but no one's really making us follow it anymore, especially after the pandemic. *Homework*Some say that they never give out homework, but it does depend on the teacher. *Learning*This one's a 50/50. They did downgrade the Video Production program (e.x. The 3's were learning things that the 1's should know more than us.), I heard they're removing personal finance math (which why....), and sometimes the lessons aren't so engaging that I'm just bored for the hour and 20 mins. *Social-emotional support*I haven't had much experience with this so I can't really comment.*Special Education*I personally have an IEP and I feel like they do a pretty good job on accommodating me with my IEP, although the teachers haven't really helped too much.*Safety*Sometimes, I do feel unsafe coming here. It's more about if a fights gonna happen because I remember when 2 kids were fighting, the most they did was spray pepper spray at everyone and I was right there where it happened.
Posted by a student on 5/4/2022Fighting almost everyday during both lunches. Constant pepper spray. Quad is somewhat nice. Most teachers are meh, but some are dope. I haven't learned a single thing.
Posted by a student on 2/1/2022If your kids don't recieve nurturing support at home and you blame the school for the the outcome, that your fault. I have one in and 3 graduated from Basic Academy. 2 who have graduated in the allotted time with a business degree and engineering degree at Point Loma University. One is teaching and the other is the head of the engineering department at the largest commercial refrigeration company on the West Coast. My other son graduated from the Coast Guard Academy with a Nautical Engineering degree and is currently traveling through the Panama Canal as an officer. They have other students who have graduated from Duke and Georgetown with full ride schorships and Berkeley. They have had Senators and congressmen who have graduated from Basic Academy. They have an amazing student counsel leadership program. They have their own homecoming parade, full dinner prom and letter on the side of a mountain for seniors to paint. Clark County is one of the largest school districts, the resources are there, its up to you how well your child will do. The school is one of the many tool you have in your arsenal to help them grow into something great.
Posted by a parent on 12/29/20217/10, because although it needs work, there is a valiant effort being made to make the school better.
Posted by a student on 5/28/2020My son is going on his third year and plans to graduate here as he gets excellent grades, enjoys his teachers and classes. The counselors are great as well. The school seems to strive to success. The IB is a great program too and the AP classes. My son is in both and loves that he is getting college ready already!

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI’ve been to this school for a year and it absolutely sucked. Fights would go on every month or so and tons of kids would get bullied for clothing or style. I was bullied for a while there. School lunch was horrible. One time a kid got a moldy grape and they would give us stuff like potatoes that look two days old and give us ripoff cheetos. Plus, the learning style was not too great. I’d have a hard time understanding homework since the instruction was extremely unclear and I have failed science during the time I was at this school. Another thing. During dismissal, they have such a bad style of letting out students. What they do is let out the buses with the cars at the same time and the students. It would be confusing for certain people and was for me. Lastly, friendships and social interaction. It was slightly easy to make friends at this school. But you’ll only make friends if your not a “freak” or something like that. Also, the special education would always just roam around everywhere. I know they can’t control it, but do the special ed helpers really have a hard time keeping them in one room, keeping them safe, and just not having them go around to wherever they want?I definitely DO NOT recommend this school and I am so glad i’ve moved out of that school. But, If you do decide to place your kid in this school then their mental health will go down the drain.Other Review8mo ago - Gordon Mccaw Elementary School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis is the worst elementary school I have ever witnessed and have been in. I feel awful my children had to attend here at all. The staff do not care about the kids. They allow their assistant principal and front desk staff to yell at the children over loud speakers in the lunchroom where it echos awfully loud. I have also witnessed the assistant principal singling a child out demanding they stand up only to embarrass that poor child in front of the whole lunch class. Awfully traumatizing coming from someone who is supposed to make children feel safe and cared about. The school refused to open a bullying case for my son who got smacked on his back where an intense red handprint mark was left on his back only because he didn't use the word bullying to describe the incident. I would never recommend this school and I strongly feel this is not an acceptable environment for children.Parent Review1mo ago - Ulis Newton Elementary School
