Read what parents are saying about Moanalua Middle SchoolIf this school is a 10/10, I shudder to think how terrible the other schools on Oahu are. I am grateful that we are moving to the mainland, otherwise I would have to home school or send my child to private school for 8th grade.I am terrified about how behind she is going to be when we get to the mainland next year.
Posted by a parent on 5/14/2019This school maybe good by hawaii standards but moving back to the mainland half way through the school year, it became apparent that the algebra teacher skipped significant and critical portions of the curriculum and still was not as far along as our child's new school.
Posted by a parent on 8/12/2018I totally recommend Moanalua Middle School. I know several families who lie to get their children into this district (make up address, use someone else’s address, etc.). It has a strong reputation in academics and music. Math: The elementary school is on the Singapore math system (totally horrible), but MMS is regular math and my daughter’s math grades improved. But her math teacher still required his way to solve the problem or it was wrong even if there are other ways for the student to solve. Classes: Students are put in groups and will stay in the same groups and same teachers in 7th grade and 8th grade, unless requested to be moved. Dress Code/Uniform: MMS has a strict dress code with the tops having to be approved school shirts and the bottoms on a few choices. But shoes, socks, hair color, makeup, jewelry is up to the student’s personality. My very fashionable daughter was not happy with a uniform at first, but now its time to move schools, she wants to keep her uniform as it is so much easier she says and no stress on what to wear. Activities: MMS is well known for their orchestra and band program. They also are very good in sports too. The middle schools in Hawaii have competitive basketball, volleyball, track, and cheerleading. They also have clubs like drama, choir, art, ukulele, too. Bullying: There will always be bullying wherever you go. They have mean girls. The disrespectful things that come out of these uneducated girls are horrible. Sadly, I think the administration could have done more to control these mouthy twits; especially those who were attending MMS on a geographic exception. Bringing weapons to school is no joke here. Just this summer school of 2015, a kitchen knife was brought and the student who expelled and two students who knew about it but did not report it were suspended for the summer. Make sure you check our children’s backpacks. I continue to recommend this school and system (elementary and high school). My daughter was very happy; she was academically challenged; and flourished at MMS.

Posted by a community member on 2/27/2014My kids did not feel comfortable there. I had a chance to talk to counselor on the phone and when I told her the issue of my kid class, she got upset ( Idk why ) and hang up on me. After that I tried to talk to principal and left messages but I never got reply from her, Teachers acts nice in front of parents but hard to believe them.

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMoanalua has decent academics and the teachers try to teach the best programs however, the VP and the Principal are undeniably the worst thing that has ever happened to this school! This used to be one of the better public schools but in recent years this school is just really lacking. Our teacher always has tried to help when our child was bullied and bashed in the head with visible bruising and scarring. The teacher was very concerned the 4 times that this has happened. The principal never addressed the problem the 9 times I complained and she had a 2 minute talk with the other student. She also kept saying she was out on "vacation".Parent Review5y ago - Major General William R Shafter Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AveragePersonally, I feel that this school is great. There are many events hosted so students can connect with the faculty and parents. The staff are nice and know how to enforce safety within the school. My child has only been here for one year and I am enjoying my time here in Hawaii. The teachers keep in touch with the parents via Class Dojo and are quick to respond to an issue. My son hasn't been complaining and he too thinks the school is fun, safe and an indeed favorable school to attend. However, I would like it if the pick-up process would be less hectic because it can take up to 15 minutes just to locate your child. However, situations like these are rare, and I feel like overall, Shafter Elementary is a decent school to attend for military families!!Parent Review2mo ago - Salt Lake Elementary School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe haven't been here long but so far we are really loving this school. All of the staff have been very helpful and kind. My daughter actually enjoys going to school. The only day that she doesn't look forward to is service day. Service day is where the students help out around the cafeteria, etc. It isn't something we are used do, but I do think it teaches good skills. Her teacher has been great too. They have some after school activity programs this year too! I only give it a 4 star and not a 5 because I do feel that they may be a little behind academically. However, the school is laid back and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Especially if you have a military child who is stressed from moving, etc. This has been good for her emotional health. I would recommend this school, they seem to care about the children.Parent Review1y ago - Puuhale Elementary School
