Read what parents are saying about Salt Lake Elementary SchoolAverage, but tends to focus on problem students. Administration has several employees who need to retire, because work ethic and customer service are greatly lacking.
Posted by a parent on 10/9/2017We currently have two children enrolled at this school. We have been at this school since 2012, (it is currently 2016) so I think we are able to give a little better perspective on what is currently happening with SLES versus other reviews here.SBAC scores are not everything. SBAC is also fairly new. In fact, when you read the scores in conjunction with student enrollment data, the SBAC scores make sense and also demonstrate that the school administration and staff are doing BETTER than their scores may reflect.A high percentage of the student population are either ELL (English Language Learners) or eligible for the free and reduced lunch. This tells you that the raw material the school has to work with is very different from other nearby schools such as Makalapa, Aliamanu, or Moanalua. This school has worked harder to get kids to read and write well in English when they probably don't even hear English being spoken at home. This school also has to deal with the issue of poverty, if students are hungry, or dealing with other related issues, they aren't going to be concentrating on academics. The school has invested in several different curricula that incorporate technology extensively (Wonders, RAZ Kids, Achieve 3000, etc.) and these programs work GREAT. However, as a parent/family, you also have to commit a fair amount of time to ensuring that your child has a quiet place and time to work on these computer-based assignments at home (for those for whom this is not an option due to limited/no computer access, arrangements can be made with individual teachers). You should also be supervising your child (not helicoptering) during these sessions, as it will help you understand what your child is learning and how you can better support that learning. The school is very safe and the administration's policies support safety.
Posted by a parent on 4/22/2016I attended this school from K-5th grade, throughout my years in the school I had a very bad experience during this time. I got bulled throughout my years and I have reported it to couple teachers, but they never did care and shrugged it off their shoulders and told me to get away from them. I remember one time I was getting pushed around in the morning and the old lady that was standing and looking out on the ramp outside of the cafeteria was just standing there watching me getting pushed around thinking we were playing around. After that I fell and hit my head on the concrete. Parents I wouldn't recommend this school to your kids but if you have to then watch your kids closely because teachers wouldn't look out for your kids.
Posted by a community member on 2/26/2014This school is a safe place for learning and my children love going here. I would be more impressed if the academics were more challenging. There are some excellent teachers at this school and some that are not. Unfortunately, I'm disappointed with the teacher my daughter has this year.

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AveragePersonally, I feel that this school is great. There are many events hosted so students can connect with the faculty and parents. The staff are nice and know how to enforce safety within the school. My child has only been here for one year and I am enjoying my time here in Hawaii. The teachers keep in touch with the parents via Class Dojo and are quick to respond to an issue. My son hasn't been complaining and he too thinks the school is fun, safe and an indeed favorable school to attend. However, I would like it if the pick-up process would be less hectic because it can take up to 15 minutes just to locate your child. However, situations like these are rare, and I feel like overall, Shafter Elementary is a decent school to attend for military families!!Parent Review2mo ago - Red Hill Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageStay away from this school. Your experience with the school largely depends on what kind of teacher you get and although there are a few wonderful teachers there, there are also a few yelling teachers that are notorious to the community. School does nothing to provide safe learning place for the students in that notorious teacher's classroom. Many family left this school after having some traumatic experience with the teacher to home school, or switch to private school. The only way to secure your children a safe, non-yelling, learning environment is to pay for private school? So frustrating and inconvenient.Parent Review8mo ago - Pearl Harbor Elementary School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur experience in this school was horrendous. Please DO NOT take your children to this elementary school. My son came home every day for months saying his teacher would verbally insult him in class, yell at him to the point Where is self-esteem degraded. The teacher went as far as popping him in the head with a piece of paper. When he didn’t understand a problem she would get frustrated with him and call him out in front of the entire class. We emailed her with our concerns of why our son was missing recess for weeks and she never communicated with us. We went to the principal and he brushed us off, his solution was for my son to suck it up. This school needs to be Facilitated by staff that actually cares for Their students.Parent Review2y ago - Aliamanu Elementary School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe haven't been here long but so far we are really loving this school. All of the staff have been very helpful and kind. My daughter actually enjoys going to school. The only day that she doesn't look forward to is service day. Service day is where the students help out around the cafeteria, etc. It isn't something we are used do, but I do think it teaches good skills. Her teacher has been great too. They have some after school activity programs this year too! I only give it a 4 star and not a 5 because I do feel that they may be a little behind academically. However, the school is laid back and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Especially if you have a military child who is stressed from moving, etc. This has been good for her emotional health. I would recommend this school, they seem to care about the children.Parent Review1y ago
