The parents and students are the best in the State. The community is super active and activists and very critical of everything. The Parents of Manoa School are super active and progressive and work hard to improve education. You can discount the low community rating. the facts are its students have the highest test scores in the State and hard driving parents.
I attended Noelani from 2003 to 2007, 2nd through 5th grade. It was awful! We learned a lot academically, but were taught to conform, not ask questions, and fear failure. Kids, including kids with special needs, were overtly bullied and teachers did nothing about it. Teachers would shame kids in front of everyone for not getting top grades or for not succeeding at dance or singing performances until they cried. We had hours of homework every day at a young age and it gave me stress dreams. I hated Noelani so much every day. It was the worst school I ever went to. It's pretty sick that they were the "blue ribbon school." I hope this school has changed since then!
Please keep in mind majority of negative reviews for Kaelepulu are related to the frustration of parents who don't qualify to enroll their children at Kaelepulu due to the residential address. Many parents give Kaelepulu school office a false address for keiki (fo Aunite, Uncle, Tutu, Papa, friend etc) to Kaelepulu school in hopes of the school being none the wiser and their child is enrolled. Kaelepulu is known as the public school that with a private school environment and culture. Kaelepulu is much safer environment than most Hawaii public schools.
School is above average for Oahu, similar to other elementary schools in Kailua. After reading the last review I had to submit. We have a different experience. Yes 2 of the teachers mentioned are great and caring (1st & 2nd grade) yes the new director is a HUGE improvement over the last principal, but many students & parents have a different view point of the art "teacher" and that includes my family. Constantly hearing complaints about her yelling at the students, not speaking loud, yelling. Other parents & grandparents have heard her yelling at her classes when on campus and passing her classroom. Some students do not want to go to art because of this and because they have no opportunity to be creative in her class. Quote from my 5th grader "we have to do everything her way, we do not get to be creative." Three of my children have had this experience, they and many of our friends children have had this experience with this individual. I hesitate to call her a teacher because she is not certified to be one. Some of the art the children produce looks good but there is a sameness about it. I appreciate that they have an art program here, just wish someone else was teaching it.
