Read what parents are saying about Washington International School - Tregaron CampusI agree with comments that the diversity at the school is geographic and not with regards to socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. The school's IB program is top-notch and unparalleled. The previous comment about students not being able to speak the language is more a reflection of that parent's own child than the quality of the education at WIS. Many of the students go on to great universities around the world, including in countries where students have learned their second language (i.e. in France, Spain, Holland, etc...). Decades after graduating from WIS, students still retain global friend and professional networks that cannot be found at any other school in the DC area- let alone in the United States. If you want your student to have an international education and culturally diverse upbringing, send them to WIS.
Posted by a parent on 5/11/2020Hype, hype and more hype. Full immersion? Not so. After over 10 years of "full immersion", students are barely able to speak the language (Spanish or French). "Global" and "diverse" thanks mainly to a rotating population of expatriates. The diversity is geographic, not racial. Poor administration - problem students are not addressed and remain in the school. Families' (and students') concerns are treated according to affluence and influence. Cliquish environment, although the school writes and aims to sell a sense of community, which all false/fake. There are much better schools out there for that kind of money. You just have to get past the smoke and mirrors and then be able to get your students to switch. "WIS lifer" no more; every year for the past 11 years, things have gotten worse.
Posted by a parent on 2/17/2018We are parents of a WIS student. It probably stands to reason that this website might attract detractors rather than supporters, but this skews the "star" rating. WIS is a demanding school and it produces articulate, aware, and educated youngsters that embrace and thrive in all environments. Take a moment to attend any function where students address the audience and your enthusiasm will be reaffirmed. The dual language aspect of the school is at its core, but is only one component of the rich education the children receive. I don't see the "cliques" that another parent wrote about, but with a small student body, friendships are formed. Yet, I have seen new student families welcomed with open arms by both fellow students and parents alike and with great success. Diversity, in all respects, is present and is the foundation of the school. The fact that students in the high school can self-direct much of their education places these students on a par of college graduates even before the students set their feet in college. WIS is consistently ranked as one of the best high schools -- and for good reason.
Posted by a parent on 10/30/2016The school is not supportive of its students. It's administrative body is disorganized. Do not send your kids here
Posted by a parent on 3/11/2016We should have known when the admissions process focused so much on the pedigree of the school's association with certain universities, rather than the experience of the students, and heard from others the treatment depended on profession/affiliations/income. We found some very concerning value sets and demonstration of values in the upper grades, that the school did not address. Agree with others that there is a high emphasis on the cash stream of families and their donations. If we had not relocated we would not have re-enrolled.

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBased on our recent personal experience and conversations with some of the parents, Eaton Elementary is not best suited for children with special needs. Evaluations were taking a long time; there were examples of special needs children being bullied by their peers, and the LEA Representative was often inaccessible. I must say that we had a wonderful experience with other children and parents. The occupational therapist was great, very devoted, and S&L therapist and psychologist were fine too. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there was shockingly unethical behavior of the general education teacher and LEA Representative, which should have led to a disciplinary action. It is unfortunate that such unreliable persons found their place in Eaton.Parent Review1y ago - Bancroft Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI feel very grateful to the hard-working teachers at this school who take an avid interest in my children and communicate frequently with me about their progress. I am really impressed with how administrators handled a student who was not behaving properly in class, by teaching empathy in a “restorative circle.” All the parents I’ve met seem really nice, and I feel proud to be part of the community. The kids have amazing opportunities like swim lessons during the day and can do robotics in the after school. All this, and it’s bilingual!I do wish the aftercare program was in Spanish, and that they offered Spanish summer camp on site.Parent Review1y ago - Oyster-Adams Bilingual School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWhen we first came to this school, we didn't speak Spanish well. Now, we are fluent and we know a lot more than we used to. Oyster Adams helped us to this. It is such a good school that supports its individuals such as parents, teachers, staff, and of course, students. We think that Oyster-Adams is an extremely welcoming community that really cares for and lifts us up and beyond what we thought was possible while keeping us in our comfort zones. I would totally recommend this school to any who would like a welcoming community that also speaks Spanish.Student Review4mo ago - Hearst Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI cannot say enough good things about Sacred Heart School. It has been exactly what our son needed for his early childhood education. We've been a Sacred Heart family for the last three years and plan to stay through 8th grade for both of our children. The teachers are warm and caring while also facilitating a great sense of confidence and independence in the children. Our son started Pre-K3 knowing zero Spanish and just two years later, he's reading and writing in Spanish and feels confident enough to have entire conversations with native speakers. We also love how the school utilizes the surrounding neighborhood and community as part of the learning process. The trips to Rock Creek Park and the Smithsonian Museums provide amazing opportunities for the children to learn. Sacred Heart offers a great balance of culture, religion, academics, and community!!Parent Review5mo ago - British International School of Washington

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBISW Student Here. The management and authority are horrendous. There is an extreme lack of communication between staff members, often leading to a negative experience for the students. Not only is the authority bad, as no rule seems to apply to anyone but it is also messy. The school faculty is very aware of what goes on between the students, they don’t know how to find a way to get respected and decide to make random accusations instead. A great level of favoritism is shown, specifically for white students that have been in the school for a long time. Anyone that doesn’t fit the ideal profile is looked down upon by most teachers, and the mental health accommodations given to students are unclear and poorly managed. The only good thing could be the teachers, who have to endure waking up every morning to work in such a terrible school. Some seem to have a passion for education, while others seem to be frustrated with their life and have no motivation to share their knowledge. Overall, it is a great school if you want a secondary system where 3/4 of the students have severe substance abuse issues that they can happily consume in the school premises. Never have I seen a bar better than the boys bathroom!Student Review5mo ago - Annunciation Catholic School
