Read what parents are saying about Hearst Elementary SchoolJust would like to see more equity and fairness across the board. Treat each student as though they matter and just treat some.
Posted by a parent on 12/5/2022We feel fortunate to be a part of Hearst Elementary. There are many special teachers there, who give the kids their all and bring so much energy to teaching. The school was renovated 5 years ago so it has a beautiful building. It is a very small elementary school with just 2 classes per grade in most grades. PTA is very active and engaged, making sure the school gets whatever it needs. You can’t go wrong with Hearst!!
Posted by a parent on 6/5/2021My oldest child is graduating from Hearst this year and it's with a heavy heart that we will be leaving "The Best Little School in the District"! He has been there since kindergarten and it's hard to imagine a more positive experience. We love: 1) the small size - only 2-3 classes per grade 2) the teachers - never had a bad year 3) the specials - excellent PE, Music, Art, Library 4) the facilities - upgraded and updated, wonderful playground and field 5) how all students know each other via "buddy classes" and other mechanisms 6) the tight-knit and community minded parent community and 7) the extremely thoughtful, data-driven, performance based lens that Principal Geoffroy (and now Dr. Chen) use to lead the school. My two daughters are following in my son's footsteps; one of them has an IEP and the administration and support services (special ed, OT, speech) have been fantastic for her as well. Can't recommend Hearst enough. The low rating on Great Schools is truly bizarre to me. Talk to parents, the PTA, or come to an open house to see for yourself...
Posted by a parent on 6/1/2021I recommend Hearst however, there is blatant grade manipulation and teaching to the test. They may as well just call it "Kaplan" Elementary as there is so much emphasis on preparing for tests.A much insidious issue is the school is now issuing fake, absurdly low grades at the beginning of the year to be able to show improvement by the end of the school year. My son is in STEM and his first math grade was really low - it was insane and no connection to reality. His other grades were also artificially, and dramatically, much lower than reality. He was upset and how does a parent even begin to explain to a child the reason for this approach? Our older son (at Deal) also was at Hearst, and he didn't experience the fake initial report card. I don't understand how DCPS can allow this dishonest approach.
Posted by a parent on 1/30/2019The administration needs to improve on their communication with families. The children are not respected.

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBased on our recent personal experience and conversations with some of the parents, Eaton Elementary is not best suited for children with special needs. Evaluations were taking a long time; there were examples of special needs children being bullied by their peers, and the LEA Representative was often inaccessible. I must say that we had a wonderful experience with other children and parents. The occupational therapist was great, very devoted, and S&L therapist and psychologist were fine too. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there was shockingly unethical behavior of the general education teacher and LEA Representative, which should have led to a disciplinary action. It is unfortunate that such unreliable persons found their place in Eaton.Parent Review1y ago - Janney Elementary School

10/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe best school in DC BY FAR! Every single one of the staff members are very engaged with all of the students. They recognize and know each and every student by name. They foster and nurturing loving environment to make all new students and current students feel welcomed and heard /seen. They operate that if a private school so there are so many programs and courses before and after school for the children. They are learning at such and accelerated rate that my 5 year old who has never been to school has already learned how to read in a matter of months. They teach social studies, math, reading, writing anything you can imagine you name it to their kindergarteners. Imagine what is being taught to the upper level grades. They do not miss a beat on informing parents and keeping us up to date with what goes on at school. They are very transparent and interactive and available whenever you need them. There’s just so much good to say about this school I’m absolutely in love with the environment. I’ve seen nothing but kindness from all students. No bullying everyone is very supportive of one another which I love! Another great thing is that students who are struggling a little in a subject are taken out of class and into McAllen groups to help keep them ahead with their peers in whichever lesson they might be needing xtra work on instead of not caring and letting them fall behind.Parent Review1mo ago - Washington International School - Tregaron Campus

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI agree with comments that the diversity at the school is geographic and not with regards to socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. The school's IB program is top-notch and unparalleled. The previous comment about students not being able to speak the language is more a reflection of that parent's own child than the quality of the education at WIS. Many of the students go on to great universities around the world, including in countries where students have learned their second language (i.e. in France, Spain, Holland, etc...). Decades after graduating from WIS, students still retain global friend and professional networks that cannot be found at any other school in the DC area- let alone in the United States. If you want your student to have an international education and culturally diverse upbringing, send them to WIS.Parent Review3y ago - Annunciation Catholic School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageNPS is a special place that focuses on your child developing as a whole person through a loving community, character building, and strong academics. We have loved the experience and feel privileged to be a part of it! Thanks to the Head of school and deliberate efforts by the administration, it is becoming much more diverse and we see this in both our children’s classes where more that 60% of the students are people of color.Parent Review2y ago
