4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageDo what you can to get access to Kalapuya Elementary if you're looking at a home in this school's zone. 1. Avoid this school at all costs if you have a child who requires special education. The things I witnessed occurring both inside of and out of the special education class room as a parent of students attending the school was horrifying. 2. THIS SCHOOL HAS CHILDREN EAT LUNCH IN THEIR DARKENED CLASSROOMS WHILE WATCHING TELEVISION SHOWS and told to be quiet. This is the solution to a lack of a cafeteria. It is detrimental to the students at this school. 3. School has no air conditioning and is a miserable existence. The principal sees no problem as her students and teachers suffer in the heat, stating it's only one month of the year! This is not a problem that is ever going to be solved. My children reported having teachers threaten to take away the one or two large box fans if they didn't behave. 4. Behavioral issues are met with one woman who is not qualified to treat such issues. 5. Communication is comical at this school. If you have a child entering kindergarten, good luck learning the ropes. 6. The parking lot and situation for school pickup and drop off is hostile, at best. Dropping your child off and having them navigate the parking lot is a danger. The principal's solution to this was to have a parent volunteer attempt to mitigate the situations, which didn't help. The only thing that seems to assist with the sheer danger is a stern PE teacher who doubles as a traffic cop in the afternoons. 7. Teachers are clique-ish and not at all welcoming. 8. A school counselor is used only for curriculum and emergent situations, not at all available for actual counseling needs. 9. Bullying runs rampant here. Especially in the combined grade classrooms. This is not a concern to teachers. 10. The school secretary and speech pathologist are the only good things about this school.Parent Review1y ago - West Salem High School

"Lots of dogs out for walks daily. All day long it’s a safe neighborhood to walk even at night. There is a dog park nearby as well as lots of parks in general. West Salem has dog groomers. And pet store. West Salem has a couple vet clinics need by which is always nice when not wanting to cross the bridge for your pet to be seen. Most areas are great to walk around in year around. "

". They have failed to mention HOA. .fees moved out of nieborhood 3 years ago . Very pleasant neighbors. Most of the manufactured homes are in good condition traffic very light save to walk communitie at night plenty of street lights . It can be a little hard at times to get out of the nieborhood onto Main highway that run into salem due to traffic but Drive safe look both ways and proceed with caution."

"Moved here from CA in 2009. The view from our master bedroom upstairs is beautiful. Miles & miles of trees. Just a gorgeous and mostly quiet area, yet downtown and shopping is just a 5 minute car ride away."
