7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have three students at East- a senior, a junior and a sophomore. I was hopeful that with the previous Principal retiring; things would get better. They have not. Requests to speak with counselors and assistant principals go ignored. My kids complain that many teachers seem lazy and just do the minimum. My oldest daughter cuts classes regularly. I asked that the assistant principal contact me to have a conversation with her. A week later, he still hasn’t gotten back to me.To be fair, there are many teachers who stay after hours to help students and clearly try to do the best they can for students. Sadly, many do not.Parent Review2y ago - Smith Elementary School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis is a delightfully diverse school that doesn't deserve its low school report card ratings. My son is in the 5th grade and due to an unusual set of special needs, has experienced six different schools. This is the ONLY one that has been able to meet them. My theory about the F rating is that the school serves a racially diverse population in a low income neighborhood. It's one of the few schools willing to work with challenging kids who are not going to boost any school's ratings. They were a turn-around school that started being successful on paper and were rewarded by less funding. In reality, the staff is top notch. The administration greets every child by name as they walk in the door. Most of the kids seem happy. Mr P. plays the ukelele as he supervises and chats with the kids on the playground. Mr. O. gave my son an extra keyboard after my son poured a drink on our one at home. Ms. F. emails my son's homework to me, since he can't seem to ever get home with it on his own. The principal, Ms E., leads the school with efficiency and patience. She is professional, yet approachable. Dr. G., the acting assistant principal, deals with the tough situations of discipline and difficult parent relationships, in a no-nonsense, yet fair manner. J., in the office, is the perfect person to tie the whole school together as she directs the flow of kids, parents, teachers, specialists to what they need and where they need to go. Please, give Smith a chance. It's so undervalued for the excellent job it does.Parent Review7y ago - McAuliffe International

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school has pros and cons. This is surprisingly a really diverse school (nothing is wrong with that) and has some very good clubs and activities. Aside from its pros like every school, it has its lists of cons. One thing the school can really improve on is their punishments, they use a system called an “RP” to punish bad kids (which makes you miss either lunch or recess) Which does not really give the students a harsh punishment because the same kids keep getting them over and over again. I suggest that instead of the “RP” system they make the students do something more affective like clean the school kitchen, or help clean the classrooms instead of recess. Another problem I would like to note is the dating, lots of kids in this school make out and have secret social media accounts which ship students with each other. The school also needs a better job of teaching the kids respect and discipline, I am constantly hearing about fights in this school and kids cussing in the hallways. I also am constantly encountering groups of disrespectful girls that laugh at me and talk about me behind my back. The school will probably not listen to this feedback but I will update this review if they consider it.Student Review7mo ago - Denver Discovery School

"This area is only 2 miles from the 16th St. mall and 1.5 miles from the big box stores in the Stapleton shopping area. This unique development is suburban living in the urban downtown. A bicycle is my preferred method of transportation in the summer. A nearby rail station will open in 2016 to provide transportation to the airport and Union Station."

"I moved to Northeast Park Hill in July 2012. So far, I've been very happy. This neighborhood used to be a very bad area. In the 1960s, there were race riots and a local shopping center was burned. In the 1980s, the bloods spread to Denver from LA and made this their home territory. However, in recent years, much has been done to improve the area. The derelict shopping mall at Dahlia Square was torn down and replaced with a senior center. There have been improvements to libraries and rec centers. Stapleton and the retail at Quebec Square made the area more desirable. Crime has fallen every year since 2005, although there is still some gang activity around. Public transportation is pretty good. The area is close to Downtown, City Park, the retail and biek trails at Stapleton. Although some of the neighborhood schools are bad, the area is full of top-quality charter schools, including Denver School of the Arts, Denver School of Science and Technology and Swigert-Macauliffe International School. Another very big deal is that houses in the neighborhood are still cheaper than comparable ones right across Martin Luther King Blvd and pretty cheap for Denver in general. The area is not perfect. Aside from the residual gang presence, the area suffers from small houses and some very dirty alleys. But overall, I give it a thumbs up."
- Scott L.
- 13y ago
"The location is perfect with stapleton shopping just 1.5 miles to the east and the 16th St. mall only 4 miles to the west. The neighborhood is extremely quiet and is completely removed from pass through traffic. "
