"Not easy to get out of Ballard. Over crowded streets, too many cars for such a small area with not a lot of main streets or highways to go from east to west or vice versa. The public transit isn’t great, rarely on time. "

"Public transportation is readily available - drive to get to the freeway takes some time though and this area is getting busier "

"When we moved to Seattle we first lived here for many years. It was like a city within a city for us, very neighborly and a great place for kids. It's a little more active now but it is a great place for anyone who wants a mix of small-town and fun places to go."

"I've lived here for 4 years and I LOVE this neighborhood. It's a great mix of young adults, families and long-time Ballard residents. You have apartments, condos, townhomes and single family homes all mixed together. You're close to all the shops, restaurants, and bars but far enough that it's a little less noisy and crowded. It feels like a mix of city feel plus suburban relaxation. It feels pretty safe although there are the occasional loud partiers walking through the neighborhood."

"I've lived in Ballard for almost two years and don't plan to move for many years. It's a quiet neighborhood with young families and about 10 blocks away from market st which has over a dozen restaurants and shops. Ballard also has a farmers market on sunday's! "

"Not many neighborhoods (with the exception of Capitol Hill) give folks the ability to walk to almost everything from a hospital, to churches, grocery stores, schools and a plethora of fine dining and stores."

"We have lived here for over two years, and we are simply so fortunate to live in a safe neighborhood that is kid and dog-friendly. Walk to grab coffee, and then stroll over to see the beautiful water of the sound. Enjoy the neighborhood feel all while being only 1 mile away from the restaurants and entertainment on Market Street and Ballard Ave. "

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AveragePreviously attended this school and I’m not afraid to admit who I am, This is Daphne Peters. This school was terrible for my mental health and whole entire experience as a child in a school, but two people made it as terrible as it was, Julianna Williams former teacher and Micheal Berkenwald current principal. These two claimed to be trying their best to make a comfortable learning experience but I can’t recall a time where I felt safe, involved, or equal to others. I want to shout out one person, Britney Ryder. School counselor and very well may be the only person who actually made this school even slightly enjoyable. I genuinely wish the remodel was never completed because I think those two people are the reason why I go into middle school being constantly in fear of teachers screamingOther Review1mo ago8 Reviews - Salmon Bay School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAll the teachers are fine but the history teacher assigns so much work that even the best students in my grade are drowning in work. I get panic attacks and horrible stress issues because of her, she grades and assigns like a high school teacher. She acts kind and understanding until week 3 of her class, and suddenly you realize she's assigned 3 high school level assignments before your first month of 7th grade. All the other teachers are fine.Student Review5mo ago17 Reviews - Matheia School

NAGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe learned of Matheia from family friends, and it’s been a great experience. The size of the school (40-55 students total, K-5th) and the fact that every class works with every teacher means that, over the years, Matheia’s teachers really get to know their students. Literacy and social emotional learning are central throughout the curriculum, and for our son, science class with Christina is what gets him out of bed in the morning. The art program is also really robust- I’m a little jealous. ;) They have also preserved outside time- 1 hour- each day, which is rarer and rarer these days in elementary education. Because they are a small school with a small staff, sometimes communication is a little slow, and they don’t have the resources for sports teams or a large music program, in house, but the PTA and staff have worked to find outside resources for extracurricular opportunities. I wholeheartedly recommend Matheia to families I meet, and we’ll be sad to leave at the end of 5th grade.Parent Review7mo ago21 Reviews
