"I got mugged here in 2009 when I first moved here. But that's the last time I got mugged. Ever since Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe and the Fox theater have been here, this part of Oakland has gotten more busy, and safer!"

We just completed our 2nd year in Instrumental Music (Strings) program and could not be happier. Like any good Arts program, it's a bit scrappy, since resources are being channeled towards kids actually thriving artistically beyond being performative.At first, we were incredibly nervous about having our sensitive, not-street-smart kid downtown, but the school has fostered such a safe atmosphere that it has completely changed our perspective on the area and the school. We have been very happy with the academics. Our kid went from being sent to the principles office (in an ousd elementary school), to getting a 4.0 gpa, scholarships, and accelerated learning opportunities. I want to give a special shout-out to the Instrumental Music Pathway (Strings!) at OSA. Over the last two years we've seen kids join the program with very little experience in Violin, Viola, Cello, & Bass and proceed to blossom. If you've got a willing, musically-inclined kiddo and you're looking for an alternative outside the typical OUSD offerings, or you are unhappy with your lottery options - OSA has been a FANTASTIC fit for us.
