"You have the option to walk/run on level or inclined sidewalks and Lake Merritt is a short walk away!"

"Lots of great walks and close to the lake! Hills to exercise your dog when walking around the block "

"I think dog owners would like to see a dog park around the lake. They probably would like to have a place so there dogs can run down to the lake and it’s fenced off from the people and kids."

"Aside from Lake Merritt it's a pretty urban place. not necessarily a spot with a ton of open space for animals. "

"Plenty of hills to wear your dog out! Close to the lake for nice walks through the park. Local businesses are dog friendly also."

"They would like the long hilly blocks in the neighborhood and access to parks trails and the lake trails. Also the pet stores and pet clinic."

"Close to FairyLand. Never see kids without parents in this community. These buildings are old so it’s a challenge for noise pollution. Also is close to a park on grand. "

"Still a lot of crime in the neighborhood. Theft and assaults. Parking is extremely difficult. Too many people. "

"nice neighborhood. Poor on street parking options, gentrification galore makes it not as cool as it used to be. Big property management companies moving out long term residents making it SF East."

"The 19th Street BART station is a 20-minute walk from my place, and from there it's just a 15-minute ride into the city. Lots of trains pass through this station, so you don't need to bother checking the schedule—you can just show up."

"The residential streets have a mix of single-family homes and apartment buildings, including a lot of really grand apartment buildings from the early 20th century. From here, it's a quick walk down to Lake Merritt for a run, and to the shops and restaurants on Grand and Lakeshore. This area has come up a lot in the last few years, and from here it's also an easy walk to Uptown, downtown, and Piedmont Ave. So there's plenty to do. "

"It's a lovely residential neighborhood near the lake. It's also near Grand Ave and Lakeshore Ave, which have great restaurants."

"It's mostly houses and apartments and is undergoing a slow gentrification process. It's perched on a hill, so there are some lake views. There are no shops in Adams Point itself—you need to go down to the lake."

"The sense of community is terrific. Lake Merritt is nearby, plus lots of great food. It's a great location. The dragon boat races on Lake Merritt are not to be missed—lots of colorful handmade canoes compete against each other."

"The lake is safe to visit during the day, and Fairyland is a great kid-friendly place to visit. It's an amusement park for small children. Lots of puppet shows, interesting buildings to explore, and areas for kids to be kids."

"Oakland's public schools are spotty. Look into where your kid would be placed and find out how the school is. The park at Lake Merritt is lovely, but is also overrun with Canada geese, which poop prodigiously. I wouldn't let my toddler roam around here for that reason. But Children's Fairyland in the park is a real Bay Area treasure—it's a simple little amusement park for young kids, and they say that it inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland!"

NAGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI moved my kids from public school to St. Paul's (4th and 7th grade) and it exceeded all of my expectations. The academics are rigorous but beyond that they are really helping the kids develop real world skills like executive functioning (staying on top of deadlines, planning for long term projects, scheduling your week), public speaking, working in groups, emotional intelligence and critical thinking. The curriculum is really engaging and interactive, my kids talk about what they are learning in school a lot more than they used to and teachers get really creative in their lessons to keep things interesting. Teachers are genuinely guiding the learning and not just following a textbook. They seem energized and excited to be at the school which is a breath of fresh air as the teaching profession has really been a tough place to be in the last decade! I sometimes worry about how AI is eroding critical thinking and replacing a lot of jobs in our society and I feel like the kids who go to St. Paul's will have a highly desired skillset that isn't easily replaced by LLM and will be confident in navigating the future no matter what it looks like. The school culture really stands out to me as well. Almost every school I toured will talk about antibullying efforts but at St. Paul's there is really an ethos of kindness and inclusivity that is in everything that they do at the school. It comes from a place of authenticity, is felt by every staff person (and even all the parents!) that I've encountered and to me it's more powerful than a disciplinary protocol. The school really builds a community within the classroom and across the whole school! For my middle schooler I was concerned that it might be too small coming from a big public school environment but I've noticed that it has actually allowed my kid to be themselves instead of trying to fit into a certain clique. My kid looks forward to going to school now and it has been so so cool to see him pursue academic excellence with pleasure and pride instead of just complying with weekly homework.I was on the fence about leaving public school, especially because I didn't want my kids to be sequestered in an environment where all their peers were privileged but the opposite has been true! I have been delighted with the socioeconomic and demographic diversity at St. Paul's. I also was hesitant because of the financial commitment but I have zero regrets. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made for my kids.Parent Review4mo ago31 Reviews - St Paul's Day School
