Pierre L'Enfant described the crest of the hill as a pedestal waiting for a monument' and shortly afterward, in 1793, George Washington laid the first cornerstone of the United States Capitol building, which now stands facing the city and the National Mall.
Union Station, at the northern end of Capitol Hill, is not only Washington DC's main rail terminal; it is the transportation hub of the greater Washington region and a tourist attraction in its own right for shopping, dining, and its huge, handsome dimensions.
TRANSPORTATION:

By Metro you are 1 stop from the Capitol South Station and 2 stops from the Smithsonian Station. A Capitol BikeShare rental rack is on the next corner at the metro station.
Union Station is just on the north side of the US Capitol Building and is a terminal for AMTRAK, the Metro Red Line, the "Circulator" buses and Metrobus, MARC Trains (Maryland), tour buses for the city and surrounding areas, and buses to New York City.
