What Locals Say about St.Johns

Review Highlights

St. Johns, Portland: eclectic, dog-loving hub with parks, food carts, and easy small-town living. People like walkable parks and trails, food carts, friendly vibe, and bridge views. They dislike traffic chokepoints, car break-ins, homeless mess, and aging schools.

"There are a lot of dog owners in this area, some are friendly (pet and owner) some are not. There is a dog park "
  • Trulia User
"I work from home so I don’t have a commute. But when I used to it was easy to get to Columbia or St. John’s bridge for my commute "
  • Trulia User
"Dog owners will appreciate this neighborhood because it’s mostly pet owners. Not like.. probably homeless people tend to walk the streets and dig through garbage. And leave a mess.."
  • Trulia User
"everyone is really friendly and keeps a good control over their dogs, and we don't have much to worry about."
  • Graceamburgey
"The dog park at Pier Park is amazing for taking dogs off-leash. There are many pet shops in the neighborhood as well."
  • Natasha.tomecek
"The commute is awful. You only get in or out two ways to the highway and there is always traffic. It’s not a good place to commute from."
  • Natasha.tomecek
"Diverse, kitschy and best bridge in the city. Great food carts, outside of Portland proper, and nice views "
  • Ed D.
"The squirrels are really loud and sometimes you can see this fine thang of a woman getting by them all riled up. "
  • Justin_e
"Lots of dogs, plenty of sidewalks, and many parks within walking distance. "
  • Sherita
"You see people out walking their dogs often and they pick up after themselves. It is a nice neighborhood to live in and close to public transit."
  • Dan S.
"Easy to get to all parts of Portland except SE in high traffic times. 18 minutes to NW 23rd. 20 minutes to Mississippi. 15 minutes to Alberta. "
  • Josh S.
"The gym is nice and people know my name. Food carts are cool. I love the bridge. Lots of homeless people going through my trash for my cans."
  • Lucas L.
"Just moved out to Portland it’s beautiful nice walking trails parks food pet friendly and people are very helpful "
  • Christine N.
"There are many young families in the neighborhood and several nice parks. Schools aren’t great, however, both in terms of the education they provide and the facilities themselves, which are dated and run down. "
  • Kyle B
"there's lots of parks in the area, most owners are considerate. keep a watchful eye out for poop, some owners are more negligent than others"
  • IImorrow67
"Not too bad. But, population is growing too fast. Need to slow down and keep the costs down. Nice town, tho. "
  • boorkjc
"there are plenty of trails and dog parks for getting out and enjoying the neighborhood with your furbaby!"
  • Maiseechaa
"The neighborhood seems to have gotten much better over the years (safety wise) but still has its moments. Cars still get broken into a lot. New apartments and shops have been added so its not the same as before. Stores are not very far from each other and outdoor activities. Every neighborhood is different. "
  • Cynthia P. C.
"The people are great! They have really come together and helped make this an awesome place to live. "
  • Caelandalros
"It has a small town feel yet it isn't that far from the rest of Portland. People care about this neighborhood."
  • Raquelbranscum

  • James R.
"This is REAL Portland. Commute downtown is always 15 minutes. Food truck groups with local brews on tap at the beer garden."

"Everybody helps out everyone else. Everybody knows their neighbors. This neighborhood is good to move to for anybody whether you are a family with kids, single, or couple, and everybody is friendly to the retirees."
