I have deep roots in this community and genuinely wanted Marie Hughes to be a school I could enthusiastically recommend. Unfortunately, my experience with the current principal, Andrea Aragon-Nava, has made that extremely difficult.My biggest warning to prospective families is to pay attention to the difference between how “Community School” and family engagement are advertised and what families actually experience when they question a decision or raise an uncomfortable concern.In my experience, Marie Hughes becomes less human and less community-based every day. Families encounter more barriers, less direct interaction, and increasingly limited access to administration. Procedures that once involved normal human interaction are being replaced by screens, locked doors, restricted access, and layers of communication.Most concerning to me has been the principal’s communication. I have repeatedly emailed Ms. Nava and received little direct response. Concerns addressed to her are often answered by someone else or only receive attention after being escalated. I have experienced her avoiding direct engagement, shutting down conversations, talking over concerns, and failing to answer the actual questions being asked.A Community School should not make families feel like they are being kept at arm’s length.There are wonderful teachers at Marie Hughes, and I want to make that distinction very clear. My child has benefited from educators who are caring, responsive, communicative, and genuinely invested in students. Some individual teachers have demonstrated exactly the collaboration and relationship-building I wish were modeled by administration.My concern is the leadership and the culture being created around families who speak up.Family engagement cannot mean welcoming parents when they volunteer, fundraise, attend events, or agree with administration while avoiding them when they ask difficult questions.Families should be able to disagree, advocate for their children, question procedures, and request accountability without feeling shut out.Marie Hughes proudly carries the Community School name, but from my experience, it feels less like a community school every day. Community requires human connection. It requires accessibility. It requires listening. And it requires leadership willing to sit at the table with families even when the conversation is uncomfortable.

Ventana Ranch Elementary has gone downhill under Principal Paula Garcia. Safety concerns, poor communication, and dismissive responses to parent reports have become the norm. Past emails document inadequate supervision, slow action on bullying, and inconsistent policy enforcement. This school was once great, but leadership has failed to prioritize student safety or parent trust.
