Posted by a parent on 6/29/2023We have been so happy at this school! I've had two kids in the school so far and have found the teachers in particular to be phenomenal. They are able to hold space for kids to go through their emotions so they can approach learning from a calm, centered place. My two kids are very different, and they've both thrived and have been welcomed socially. I also credit the approach the school uses during the First Six Weeks where classrooms intentionally spend time together to thoughtfully come up with how the classroom should run and how everyone should treat one another. I think it creates a lot of buy-in and helps everyone do their best. I also love that students that spend a chunk of time in the special ed classrooms also come into the general education classrooms regularly to build relationships with all students and are included in birthday parties, etc. Plus the expeditions have been incredible!!! It is stunning to watch these kids legitimately become experts in something. Both of my daughters are far better birders than I've ever been, for a very easy example. And my daughter has been able to identify individual orcas in the pod they'd studied by sight while watching a documentary!Plus the looping classrooms!! Having the same teacher and same cohort from 2nd-3rd and then from 4th-5th takes the growth potential up about twelve notches.
Posted by a parent on 6/29/2023My kids absolutely adore Thornton Creek elementary and have found it to be an incredibly welcoming and inclusive school. The social emotional learning is great and the teachers really care about nurturing a love of learning. My sons are thriving there and i wouldn't want them anywhere else within the Seattle Public Schools system as they are not only learning about literacy and math but also to be kind human beings.SPS in general has really lowered the bar in recent years by taking away advanced learning opportunities for all and underfunding schools so the only reason I keep my kids in it is due to the extraordinary expeditionary learning opportunities offered at Thornton Creek The facilities are also new which is great given how many outdated schools there are in the district.I wish the school could provide more challenging math but that's an SPS issue not a Thornton Creek one so the same inability to learn advanced math would be present at any school within the district.I'd highly recommend the school to anyone looking for an innovative learning environment that breeds curiosity, empathy, and a love of learning .
Posted by a parent on 6/16/2023I have two kids at Thornton Creek and one who has recently graduated and is in Middle School. I was worried about my son's transition to middle school but am happy to say it has been so smooth. This has much to do with his time at Thornton Creek. My son learned how to work independently and in groups, how to get along with others, stand up for himself and take ownership of his work. My younger kids are thriving at TC. They have many opportunities to learn and grow, have supportive teachers who care deeply about creating safe and inspiring environments. My kids love going to school and constantly talk about their expeditions. They feel more connected to the natural world because of their expeditions on gardening, outdoor play, beavers, salmon and have also learned about engineering and government. TC creates a caring atmosphere that puts kids first. I highly recommend checking out this school for yourself and seeing if it's the right fit for your family.
Posted by a parent on 10/14/2022This school is an unsafe place for Black and Brown folk. The staff has been there forever and is rejects any feedback about their white-perspective curriculum. The principal suppresses minority voices to so the teachers don't feel uncomfortable. Wealthy parents donate big cash for the school but demand it be spent on the things they want their own child to experience. Seattle Public School district has settled a harassment/bullying lawsuit based on behavior that still thrives amongst school staff and complicit parents. Enrollment is down30% in the last 3 years. Families of color leave even in the middle of the school year. Yet administrators and teacher scratch their heads and think the problem is "disruptive parents" - code for Black and Brown voices. If you want to keep your head down and write multiple checks a year to support public education, this is a good school as long as your kid doesn't need has a learning difference or won't be singled out as different.

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur child was in the elementary program from 2021-2022. Having had great experiences at the former Montessori school in our home state, I expected a certain standard in Montessori education as Northwest Montessori School stated that their school was fully accredited and recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). The head of school, appeared eager for us to sign the contract and to get our money. As a Montessori trained guide, as someone who attended Montessori school, and observed in Montessori classrooms in the US and abroad, I found the lower elementary program at Northwest Montessori School to be of poor quality. The lower elementary classroom is like a daycare. We didn't get an opportunity to observe in the classroom and we later regretted signing the contract. We noticed practices inconsistent with Montessori method and philosophy. The leadership is also very slow in their communication. The lead teacher in the lower elementary was a stoic, unfriendly, and unwelcoming individual. I was quite appalled to hear that he would call the kids, "dodos." He also failed to provide our kid with adequate number of lessons in many areas, including math, writing, science, and reading. When we brought up our concerns, he either blamed us, our kid, or made an excuse and would not take responsibility. Our child fell behind in reading, writing, and math; science education is deficient in this classroom. Although we did a lot of tutoring at home once we realized that our child was falling behind, we wished we never sent our kid here. The most concerning was when an older child in the classroom targeted our kid and acted inappropriately with him. We brought this to the attention of the lead teacher in the lower elementary, the head of school (Elizabeth Truman), and couple of administrators many times. They were slow to respond. Elizabeth Truman even tried to put the onus on our child regarding defending and there were no real consequences for the other child. They all failed to protect our child while he was victimized many times in the presence of three adults (the lead teacher and his two assistants) until they finally separated the other child a month before the end of the semester. This place failed to provide a safe learning environment for our child, let alone offer a good Montessori education. Fast forward, our child is now back in his old Montessori school. BIG difference. He learned so much since we left this one.Parent Review11mo ago - Seattle Waldorf School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe have been a part of the Seattle Waldorf School for three years. We made the decision to move our son to the school when he was in 5th grade. If I were to articulate the main reason we needed a change, we were looking for a school where our son would be fully "seen" by the teachers and the community and not get lost on zoom calls and standardized tests. We were also very interested in SWS's curriculum and experiences. Our son has thrived at SWS. His confidence has grown, he is excelling in his classes, and his sense of self has become more defined through curriculum, class experiences and with support from the amazing teaching staff. Our son did not start in kindergarten but has quickly caught up with the other students with his strings practice and all of the arts. I have been astounded by how quickly he has absorbed new skills and the pride he feels when learning something new.The SWS school does an amazing job providing hands on experiences for the class. When my son did his first 3 day camping trip at Mt. St. Helen's with the trip, he had never been in a sleep away camp. He has since done multiple trips every year and comes home leveled up in his confidence. The school creates positive interactions where the children learn how to work together, how to get along, how to learn and appreciate their differences. I am grateful for this and have seen first hand how it has helped my son grow. SWS has a genuine sense of inclusivity and kindness that permeates the school. We were so happy we have also moved our daughter who is in third grade. She just did her first overnight camping trip on a working farm and loved it. SWS has been transformational for our family. We are so grateful that we found SWS and that our children are in an environment where they are happy and thriving intellectually and emotionally.Parent Review5mo ago - Our Lady Of The Lake School
