Read what parents are saying about Charles J. Colgan Sr. High SchoolThe teachers tend to be engaging at least in the classes I've been in. I think the biggest issues in the learning side are the social studies and math classes. I've had excellent teachers in both departments, but most of the time the lessons are lectures and the work is the same all the time. I understand its hard to make those subjects engaging, but more effort could be made. The school is safe for the most part, at least during school hours. I have heard there are issues with bullying and drugs, but I haven't seen them. I do know the school is not very responsive to students. I have severe Anxiety and I have Autism. The school does not assist this issues at all. In fact, they denied me a 504 plan, after waiting a month to respond to our initial request. They had no meeting, and only had one person review the ADOS report. They did not tell me why they denied me; they only said I was denied. They are also infamous for not accommodating for disabilities. "Fin Friends" feels more like a publicity stunt to make people think they are accommodating, but it's more for the non-disabled students then the disabled students. Frankly, I think it's an alright school unless you have any disability.
Posted by a student on 11/13/2023From the principal down, this school has shown our family they lack the experience, preparation, and efficient/effective resources required for our students to be successful across All domains. Both have been withdrawn from PWCS "educational" practices. Packing now to move to a school system with the resources, training, understanding, and willingness to implement appropriate and positive learning environments for those with exceptional needs.
Posted by a parent on 5/19/2023Teachers and staff consistently go above and beyond for the students here. The academics and fine arts programs are top notch across the board. SOL tests are not required every year in order to alleviate some of the test-inundation students today face, which can affect “great schools” scores, but improves overall student mental health.

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAs a student who attended Hylton all 4 years (graduated in 2016), I LOVED it! I loved pretty much all my teachers (there’s always 1 or 2 I didn’t like each year though). CISL was a lot of work, but it was fun. There’s a lot of cool opportunities that come through CISL. The history department at Hylton is truly amazing with the teachers - they’re all super knowledgeable and are very passionate about the subjects. A lot of teachers are willing to help you in their class if you speak to them privately and/or go to after-school help. The student population is super diverse, and everyone is very open with their culture/experiences so you really learn a lot about others views/experiences which is super fun. School sports were really fun, although a little less funding towards football and boys basketball and more towards the other sports would be nice. But the school spirit is really awesome to witness!!Student Review5y ago - Thurgood Marshall Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageCOVID has become a coinvent excuse for Marshall to lower expectations on students and themselves. Writing expectations are 1-2 grade levels below where they should be. If students are behind due to COVID then no apparent steps are being taken to help bring them up to speed. If you need any special services for your child, you will need to contact district level coordinator to get the administration to take action. Written intervention request and multiple calls were ignored for more then 30 days until district level support was sought.Parent Review1y ago - Coles Elementary School
