Stark Elementary School

We are new to FBE this year and they have been nothing short of amazing for us. My daughter is in kindergarten. They have helped support through an ADHD diagnosis and provided resources for a 504 plan and specific support with great results. Thankful for the school leadership who is present, available, and there for the families.

Not a good experience with this school at all. Aside from the fact that the school is not very diverse, they don’t have the experience, teacher tenure, nor accessibility to programs experienced teachers to help the students accelerate. Instead of offering support, intervention and effective tools to students with trouble learning, (which if you look at the data is more than half of the school and they fall below state level on most, if not all categories) they offer a patternless, inefficient “small group” within the same classroom as the teachers that have been ineffective. When that doesn’t work the response is typically “they child isn’t responding to our EXCELLENT interventions so there MUST be some sort learning disability can we test your child”?Instead of recognizing the fact that the entire school is falling behind in several different areas and that major adjustments need to be made with staffing and resources, they would rather leave the students behind which leads to low test scores, low progression and retention. Until the person(s) in charge advocate for the children and give them the resources and support they need to make improvements, this school and MOST IMPORTANTLY the students will continue to fall behind. Get your child out before it’s too late.

During my past few years as a parent at this school, I've realized that this school has many shortcomings that prospective parents should be aware of. The first is the class size. Every class in kindergarten is well above the state cap. One class has 31 kinder students- thirty-one!!! That ratio makes it nearly impossible to build teacher/student relationships, monitor student progress, or really provide any individual attention at all regardless of how skilled the teacher is. The classes within a grade level are not balanced either. Some have 16 or 17 while other classes in the same grade have 25 or 26. Several grades have split level classes. This means that your first grader may be put in a class with mostly second grade students. As a result, your first grader will not see any of his or her friends at recess, lunch, or during specials. They will be isolated from everyone they have been friends with for an entire school year. It's really sad to see your child separated and missing all of their friends and working on above grade level curriculum they may or may not be ready for. This school uses and openly supports shame based punishment. Students clip up or down on a behavior chart displayed in front of the whole class. Can you imagine as an adult if every time you made a mistake at work, you had to get up in front of your collogues to move a clip with your number down? Or, if every time you did something compliant, you clipped up above your coworkers? This behavior system is antiquated, goes against current academic research, and creates a competitive community where students are viewed and labeled as good or bad in front of everyone. At a time when youth are struggling with mental health more than ever, this school disregards student emotional well being and places more emphasis on compliance and fear/shame based behavior management. The communication about academics at this school is inconsistent. Only a few teachers send out weekly newsletters. Parents have no clue what their students are working on, which in turn makes it very difficult to support your child academically. Yes, there was one curriculum night that overviewed the entire year, but for parents who want to work with their child at home, you are left on your own guessing what would be beneficial. Many of these shortcomings would be easy to fix; it's just not a priority which is a shame. This could be a great school, but it needs a leader with a vision who strives for growth.

We discovered Arborcreek before our oldest child was born. My wife was raised in a Montessori environment and wanted the same for our kids. We toured many of the Montessori schools in Dallas and settled on Arborcreek due to the feel of the school, the warmth of the program and the adherence to the Montessori principles. That was 7 years ago and we are so happy with the decision that we made.Sima, the teachers and the staff are truly incredible. The care and attention that they give each child is tremendous. Through early childhood, we found them to be our partners in trying to make sure our kids were hitting the milestones that they should and were getting the social, emotional, and academic tools that they needed. Our 3 children each started in the infant room and their experience at Arborcreek is a big part of who they are now. We made a difficult decision as our kids got older to move to a school closer to our house. We kept our youngest at Arborcreek in spite of the commute as we love the school so much.You will read a common thread in the review...Arborcreek is a gem of a school. It interesting because that is how I typically describe it to our friends. It truly is a gem.
