Read what parents are saying about The Speyer Legacy SchoolStrong curriculum that meets the children where they are, supportive and creative teachers, and exceptional and tight knit community.
Posted by a parent on 1/26/2024Our child has been at Speyer since 1st grade and is now about to graduate 8th grade. Our experience at Speyer has been amazing. The school has cultivated grit, curiosity and a love for learning in her. The teachers care about each student. The parent community is supportive and friendly.
Posted by a parent on 2/6/2023Our child as been at Speyer for almost 7 years and we've have been very happy. More than happy. Coming in we expected Speyer to have a a very strong program in STEM, especially math, and we were right. But we've found Speyer's humanities programto to be equally if not more impressive. The kids just did a section on WWI poetry, and dissected a college level case study, among other things.. And they are always steering the kids toward independent learning and discussion. What's stands out the most is how much our child enjoys being at school, or working on independent projects a home. She will end up graduating middle school better prepared in terms of writing and critical thinking skills than I was out of high school.
Posted by a parent on 1/31/2023I have two children at Speyer, one in the middle school (who has been a Dragon since K) and one in the lower school. My children have very different personalities and passions, yet Speyer is helping them both learn how to express themselves with confidence, practice active listening, and work in community with others towards a shared purpose. The academics are top-notch and the administration/faculty/staff make a conscious effort to support their social and emotional learning in an age-appropriate way that is often integrated seamlessly with curriculum/classroom routines. The high faculty to student ratio allows them to do all this. We think highly of our children’s peers, socialize with many families (not just the ones in our children’s grades!) and we regard the Speyer community as our extended family.
Posted by a parent on 1/27/2023I am the parent of a junior in HS. He attended Speyer from K through 8th, and we could not be happier with the foundation he received at Speyer. He has been well prepared academically for every advanced class in his high school, and Speyer gave him the skills to participate in his classes and speak publically with confidence. Perhaps most importantly, his closest friends are still from Speyer even though they have gone to many fabulous high schools. That is a testament to how Speyer encourages kids to be empathetic and supportive of each other. My son still goes back on days off to visit with teachers -- three years after he graduated. Speyer is a wonderful, unique school where kids learn in a community of like-minded peers. We are so grateful for the wonderful education he received there, and we would recommend the school to anyone with a child who is curious, who loves to dig deeply into topics, and who is passionate about learning.

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is not good but not the worst. My child used to go here since 2nd grade and when she was In 5th grade everybody had to go remote because of the covid outbreak. Before this happened, There was a senior trip which required you to pay in order for your child to go. I paid a portion on the fee to go and ever since then i haven't gotten my money back as well as other parents i am hearing from. I have heard parents have even paid the full price which was about $350 and they've never received a refund. Other than that the school is not that bad, But i wouldn't recommend as your first school to enroll your child in.Parent Review11mo ago - Riverside School for Makers and Artists (The)

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis is a review of PS 191 MIDDLE SCHOOL. I have no experience with the Elementary school which I am sure is wonderful. My daughter is a bright, creative and well behaved 6th grader. She loves to learn and is an amazing budding artist. We enrolled her here because of their focus on the arts. I immediately had my daughter in the Arts after school which is the only redeeming quality of this school. The purpose of going here is to build her portfolio so she can apply to a specialized Arts High School. So, the after school and the arts program have been great... However the rest of the experience has been pretty awful. My daughter reports constant behavioral issues with most of the other students - generally disrespecting the teachers, slacking academically, and disrupting the class. Teachers are frustrated, arguing with and yelling at disrespectful kids in class. Nothing is done about disruptive kids, they just stay in class causing chaos. There is no homework. My daughter isn't learning much of anything. The academic standards are so low, that at this point, I just see the school as a total time waster for housing kids who are not even there to learn. It's quite sad. In my day, they would move these types of kids into a "special school' for disruptive kids. But now they just leave them where they are and lower academic standards for perfectly intelligent kids. I will be withdrawing my child as soon as I am able. The one redeeming quality of this school is Miss Hood, the arts teacher and the Arts after school program.Parent Review1y ago - Abraham Joshua Heschel High School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child attended PS452 as a 5th grader this year. Coming from abroad and not speaking a word of English, he was warmly welcomed by the kids, staff, and teachers. He felt included from the first day, received amazing support from everyone throughout the year, started speaking English after one month only and was totally fluent by the end of the year. He made friends for life and loved going to this school. The PTA is excellent, the teachers are very engaged, the communication with the teachers and staff was always fluid, constructive and helpful. As everywhere, problems can happen, but they were always immediately addressed and transparently discussed with the parents. This school does a fantastic job proving that diversity is the way to go and gave us the best possible experience of the welcoming, open minded, diverse spirit of New York City.Parent Review9mo ago - Abraham Joshua Heschel School
