Heschel may be a great place for some, but it's not for all. They do not care for students with learning differences and have some tyrannical administrators. Not for everybody.

BUYER BEWARE! Heschel states that it welcomes pluralism but that couldn't be further than the truth. Administration wants everyone to be homogenized. Diversity is NOT celebrated. As one reviewer put it " They do not care for students with learning differences and have some tyrannical administrators. Not for everybody," this could not be more true! Let me say the teachers are the BEST and innocent in our exp. I have the highest respect for them. Unfortunately, the head of the school and head rabbi have a very transactional way of approaching "differences in learning." If your child has never attended private school, think twice. There is an entirely different culture and know that the school can at any time kick your child out for ANY reason even if not justified. The head of the school made us feel we were walking on eggshells and has NO CLUE how to treat people and see the bigger picture. For sake of anonymity it is difficult to write the whole truth. The experience at Heschel left us extremely distraught and out of sorts . I was so upset that I even turned to a rabbi who's children also coincidentally went to Heschel and he was appalled and surprised at how administration threatened and treated us due to our child's learning differences. Our child was far from an F student and was finding their way. Coming from public school and adjusting to private school, the double curriculum/longer hours, and trying to be accepted socially by new peers is a challenge for anyone, so being a C student was not so terrible in our eyes. Getting a "C" in Heschel = "A" in public school. Administration accepted our child into their school, it was their responsibility to accommodate and not see our child as the "black sheep." We took our child out of the high school after feeling unwelcomed and threatened with the possibility of expulsion. What pained us was administration, not being truthful; they used a minor teenage behavior infraction as a scapegoat to cover up the real reason that they didn't feel our child was a right fit academically. Mind you our child is excelling in college! We learned that while Heschel does provide a solid education and is special in its own way it is NOT the end all. We put Heschel on a pedestal that it didn't deserve. In the end a happy well adjusted child outweighs state of the art education. A toxic school environment doesn't end at school ,it follows you into every part of your life. Our child was better off leaving.
