Read what parents are saying about Ps 234 Independence SchoolAmazing school! The teachers and fantastic but what really makes this school so great is the community.
Posted by a parent on 12/25/2023We had two children attend PS234 from K through 3rd grade (we ended up then relocating out of Tribeca). The staff is incredibly hard working and the parental community involvement is top notch. We have many fond memories and friendships that have been forged through communally living in the neighborhood through the morning and afternoon drop-offs and the kids all playing together many an afternoon up the street at Washington Market Park. PS234 is one of the best aspects of living in Tribeca.
Posted by a parent on 8/3/2020The school has beautiful facilities and fairly strong teachers. It can just feel a little big. Since it's the default option for the neighborhood, the parents aren't as consistently engaged as they are at some of the other schools. The PTA is very welcoming.
Posted by a parent on 5/23/2018Communication with teachers and administration is very limited, and frustrating. Anything which disturbs the carefully-maintained image of harmony and excellence isn't tolerated, even if it's masking serious problems among the staff. Creativity isn't encouraged if it disturbs the standard path of education set in stone by the school, and real-life examples and events are ignored in classrooms. The school is a safe and friendly environment for kids, but there are deeper problems being hidden by that facade.
Posted by a parent on 12/11/2016There are experienced, hard working, and talented teachers leaving this school because of the principal. Brand new and inexperienced teachers are replacing all the teachers who have left resulting in a very young and unprepared staff. Standards for teachers and children vary depending on the teacher or the child and there is no consistency in communication. The school does not use any research based reading or writing curriculum and the implementation of the math curriculum varies. I have not personally experienced any discrimination against my child, but I have heard some children with special needs have been 'counseled out' of the building with the principal saying, "We don't have that program here." My understanding is that parents are largely unaware of how serious the situation has gotten, but this kind of behavior should not be tolerated. Our children and our teachers deserve better.

10/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis National Blue Ribbon Award school is a gem in NYC public education system. It is a small school with warm culture where families are warm and involved. The school uses Singapore Math curriculum, with sufficient learning support for students with their own pace. Teachers are loving and energetic. Parents receive daily messages through Apps or text for school trips, events, math exam reminder and activity photos. Principal has a real open door policy. The school have specialty classes of chess and Robotics to all the students. The music program here is out of the world, as the principal was from Special Music School. Students from elite private, G&T, charter and zoned schools have been transferring here with a waiting list. There are field trips almost every month to museums, central park, etc. PTA is doing a great job fund raising and spending it wisely.Parent Review4y ago - Ps 89

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is lacking in many areas. Don't be fooled by the new exterior. The biggest problem area of all is leadership which is very poor. The principal hides many issues such as bullying and other events that happen in the building that she continuously keeps from the parents. Teachers here don't take the time or even care to make subjects more interesting. Zero effort in class just for show when parents come around for 30 minutes twice the school year to sit in class. Repeating a lesson to them is an absolute hassle and the blame falls on the kids all the time. They don't strive to help, they want to leave as soon as possible. My kids came in 2017 and since being very excited about the teachers back at the beginning we have seen a huge decline in all the years up till now 2023. The music teacher has been replaced 3 times and the current one is still completely horrible, lacking any skill to teach at all. Students watch cartoon movies in class constantly! She gave a 20-minute recital with minimal effort on her part. It lacked substance and was a complete letdown and a waste of time to come in mid-day work hours. Years back at the beginning a recital concert was an hour long and the students learned a lot, that's back in 2017. The Art teacher has also been replaced 5 times. In the beginning, there used to be some type of art show but now Art at this school is none existent. The (PTA) keep asking for money and contributions but where it all gets spent is a complete mystery because they offer nothing of value for many years now! I absolutely would not recommend this school to anyone.Parent Review9mo ago - Downtown Little School
