High School for Environmental Studies

We’ve had a wonderful experience at PS 111 in Hell’s Kitchen. The transition to the school was seamless when my daughter joined in 3rd grade after being accepted into the Gifted & Talented (G&T) program. After learning more about the school and the many opportunities it offers, we decided to move our son to PS 111 as well.The school provides several affordable and free after-school programs, which has been a huge benefit for our family. Through partnerships with organizations like YOSL, my children have had the opportunity to learn violin and cello. There are also creative partnerships with a local theater, giving students exposure to the arts.PS 111 also does a great job building community. Families are invited to events like movie nights and monthly “Family Fridays,” where we learn more about what students are working on in class. There are also many opportunities for parents to volunteer. The PTA is very active, and the principal clearly cares about the students and is always accessible. It’s truly a supportive and engaging school community.

My child has been attending for 6 years. I have seen the good and not so good. All in all the experience has been wonderful. Sacred Heart is a small and nurturing environment. The teachers thus far have been caring and responsive. Individualized attention is given to the students. Again, the new principal is great. Parents need to be more supportive and involved.

Heschel may be a great place for some, but it's not for all. They do not care for students with learning differences and have some tyrannical administrators. Not for everybody.

My child attended PS452 as a 5th grader this year. Coming from abroad and not speaking a word of English, he was warmly welcomed by the kids, staff, and teachers. He felt included from the first day, received amazing support from everyone throughout the year, started speaking English after one month only and was totally fluent by the end of the year. He made friends for life and loved going to this school. The PTA is excellent, the teachers are very engaged, the communication with the teachers and staff was always fluid, constructive and helpful. As everywhere, problems can happen, but they were always immediately addressed and transparently discussed with the parents. This school does a fantastic job proving that diversity is the way to go and gave us the best possible experience of the welcoming, open minded, diverse spirit of New York City.
