Read what parents are saying about Johnson Senior High SchoolJohnson is a school with great potential, unfortunately this potential will not be realized for another 10 years. I would most definitely send my child here, but only because I want them to become street smart before entering college. I can attest to the quality of education Johnson provides to it's students, my family has had hundreds of Johnson graduates. The East Side community is the only thing holding this school together, so if you're comfortable with that mentality, then this is the school for you. If not, then I would look else where. The East Side has an extreme sense of identity, most of which has been lost or misconstrued into selfish pride on the current generations attending the school. Students with little supervision at home will struggle here! They will become subject to adult issues very rapidly and need much more attention than the school can afford. Get your child into the ROTC program! They may be ostracized by their peers a bit, but you won't regret it when they aren't repeating high school courses in college. Trust me on that! Some of the finest students in the city represent Johnson, but the same can be said about poorest performing students.
Posted by a community member on 4/22/2013My kid is thriving at Johnson (9th grade in 2011/12, and 10th grade in 2012/13). Johnson special ed teachers are exceptionally good at what they do, helping my daughter out of her shell socially and academically. She went from failing classes and being totally withdrawn (zero friends) at previous schools to making the B honor roll in 9th grade AND participating weekly in after school clubs. She is blossoming and truly believes she can go to college now! We feel so lucky to have finally found teachers who can give my kid what she needs to succeed (mostly extra patience and skilled redirection). I also appreciate how the school communicates with parents using prerecorded voice messages (especially when they let me know about serious violence at the school, how the situation was resolved with local law enforcement, and offering my kid resources to cope if we have any concerns). The principal is very professional and genuine, and I am amazed by the courtesy I have experienced as a parent trying to help my kid. I feel like we are all on the same team and my daughter is now "winning" because of it.
Posted by a parent on 2/14/2013This school is the pinnacle of "ghettoness". One of the most annoying things about this school are the moments within which you are walking to your next class during passing time, and a bunch of the more immature and ignorant students stand around in your way doing whatever it is that they're doing, and you have to literally shove them out of your way. Often times, you can see an authoritative figure telling these students to "head to class", because well, that's all they do. Stand around during passing time then arrive in class late. No need to go into the amount of fights which take place, because I'm sure you are well aware. Maybe just not the reasons for it, and I don't blame you, because I sure as heck don't know. I could assume that it either has anything to do with gangs, sex, or drugs though. And I am not even joking. Honestly, I couldn't say what weird things go on during [or after] school. Seeing myself as one of the more mature students, mixed in with my own realistic introverted personality, I just ignore many of those things. Ultimately, I am disappointed about the lack of insightful, intellectual and mature students that this school has to offer.

Made BIG mistakes and did not take responsibility for their mistakes but instead DENIED it. Absolutely unbelievable! Do not enroll your children into this school!!!Parent Review11mo ago - Phalen Lake Hmong Studies Magnet

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI love Community of Peace Academy. All three of my sons have attended this school, and the attention and care they have received is amazing. The teachers are very experienced, and many of them have been at the school for 10+ years. This school really values relationships and peace. Of course kids have conflicts that come up, but the school teaches them conflict resolution skills to work through it, and when a kid gets in trouble, they are expected to right their wrongs. One of my sons had some behavior issues when he was little, and even though some days he was breaking rules multiple times (like, double digits), the teacher still treated him with kindness and gave him the chance to grow and improve his behaviors. Neither I nor my son ever felt like the teacher was mad or disliked him despite his challenges. The patience, love, and unconditional positive regard is so evident at this school. I also felt like my kids were challenged academically. For example, my middle boy was an early reader, and the teacher provided him with individualized lessons to help him grow at his own speed. I highly recommend this school.Parent Review3y ago - Life Prep

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AveragePLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL. Horrible experience there. So upset with the school, principal Nicky Napierala and their special education staffs. The school system and their principal there is a joke. My daughter was not a normal child. Her brain process things slower then normal. Suspending her everyday mean less time for teaching and learnings. She's missed all her IEP class and sessions that was paid for to the school. I felt really bad for my daughter at the time that she need their help the most but they threw her under the bus and ignored her disability. Know wonder why the school had a high suspension rate for disability students. I'm glad I took my daughter out. The school was horrible, students at this school is graded at below level. Find a better school for your little educators, not a school where kifs are falling further behind.Parent Review1y ago - St Jerome Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI am forever grateful I made the decision to send my son to St. Jerome. The teachers get to know each child and their unique styles. My son struggled academically the first few yrs due to learning disabilities. The teachers and administrators helped to create a unique plan and creative adaptive techniques. Each semester his test scores and retention improved. They know him personally, which is a huge advantage a small school and low teacher student ratio can provide. The focus is progress based pin on individual level.I am thrilled with the progress I have seen in my son, academically, spiritually, and personally. The strength of character of the students and staff is unlike any I have seen at an elementary level school!Parent Review6y ago
