Berwyn Parents Beware: Our Experience Was Deeply DisappointingWe live in Berwyn and have access to decent, safe public schools. We chose St. Leonard because we were hoping for something more personal: stronger communication, a closer relationship with educators, and a school environment that felt less transactional.Unfortunately, our experience was the opposite.Over the course of the year, minor behavior concerns involving our daughter were repeatedly escalated into major issues without clear, timely, or direct communication with us as parents. Our daughter is energetic, talkative, and spirited, and it often felt like the school was more focused on managing her personality than understanding or supporting her.The most alarming example was when our daughter had scratches on her forehead that she appeared to get while sleeping. We did not know exactly how it happened. Rather than first having a direct conversation with us, the school contacted DCFS. That decision caused significant distress and reflected, in our view, a serious breakdown in trust and communication.Communication from administration was one of the biggest disappointments. We expected a private school environment to be more collaborative and responsive than public school. Instead, we found the communication to be less personal, less direct, and far more frustrating.Parents should also understand that religion is not simply present at St. Leonard; it is deeply embedded into the daily experience. Families who are not looking for that level of religious instruction should consider that carefully.Academically, we were also disappointed. Math instruction often felt unnecessarily confusing, with concepts taught in multiple different ways, while the nightly homework load felt excessive for the grade level. For the cost, we expected better communication, better partnership, and a more thoughtful approach to educating and supporting our child. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend St. Leonard. Berwyn families should seriously consider whether their public school option may actually provide a better, safer, and more balanced experience.
