Timber Lakes Elementary School

I was so excited for my child to start this school only for me to have to pull them out after a few weeks. I have a *very very* well behaved child that also excels in school. With that said…ugh…Recess was almost non-existent, no talking in class, no talking in the hallway, no talking at lunch. There was very little fun or socialization to be had. Recess when not skipped lasted all of 10 min or so because the teacher didn’t want to be outside. There is no play equipment for older kids.My daughter tipped her chair back on two legs and the teacher told her she had to sit on the wall at recess. She has *never* gotten in trouble at school and this crushed her. She started have anxiety attacks at home and during the day at school. I later found out that she was being ignored and mistreated daily by her teacher. (Who ended up leaving the school a month after starting). The kids were given no study materials for tests. All of the children were failing their tests with my child having the highest failing grades. I asked for resources and was told there were none.Besides the bad teacher, I had rude and cold interactions with several of the staff…I’m pretty bubbly and didn’t understand this. My husband had the same experience. I saw the red flags at the open house when the principal was standing at a distance trying not to talk to parents. I ended up pulling my daughter out a few weeks in. She was so stressed and I could see her little light dimming. I was not rude or confrontational with anyone at that school— I was met with an attitude at the front desk upon leaving. I would not recommend this place to a single person. It’s like a military school. I hope they find a great leader for the school—it has a lot of potential.

Sunrise Elementary is an excellent school with outstanding teachers. My son currently attends and is in 4th grade. My daughter attended, Sunrise K-5 and was thoroughly prepared for middle and high school. As a tenth grader at Timber Creek HS she takes many AP classes including pre-calculus.

We love how welcoming the school staff is.

Sunshine Elementary is well below average and this school would benefit from a Principal that truly cares to work with children. My experience goes with having a child who has a learning dissability and behavioral issues. I was hopeless seen the behavior at home and receiving constant calls from the school. I asked for help over one year ago. The staff back then were pushing to get someone to help us out. Still, it took over one year for someone to start evaluating my son. I also did my job and took my son to the neuropsychologist which also took about one year to get in since they are the specialists. In the middle of all of this, I kept getting notices about my child, calls, texts through the app. While I want to know what is going on with my son, I also think that the staff lacks empathy. The staff should be trained to deal with different types of behaviors. It is already exhausting at home and then the school is making a big scene about every little thing that happens. I just asked for comprehension and emphaty. No matter what happens, it doesn't matter who saw or didn't see. It was always my son's fault. While my son also comes home hurt from other kids hitting him but nobody says anything. I guess because they consider him "the problem child," they don't bother to investigate. Ms Peña, the principal, calls me today and tells me my son is suspended for the 2nd time this year because a substitute teacher said she tried taking something away and he smacked the teacher's arm. I reject any bad attitude and behavior, but the lack of understanding here is a joke. He has BEHAVIORAL ISSUES AND A LEARNING DISSABILITY. Your school psychologist diagnosed him. BEHAVIORAL ISSUES: patterns of problematic actions that interfere with a person's ability to function daily and get along with others. This type of behavior is expected but she decided that writing a referral and suspending him will do it. Ms Peña, shame on you!!! Do better! Find good solutions and don't go the easy route. It is such a shame that the kids with special needs are treated this way and don't have the oportunity to grow but instead they just want to get rid of the problem.
