Read what parents are saying about Somerset Island PrepThis is my son's first year at this school and we are both thankful that this option for high school is available for him. The smaller school setting, engaged instructors and general family-like atmosphere will ensure his success. Thank you.
Posted by a parent on 6/5/2016Individual attention, teachers are dedicated and willing to work with students after school as well as on Saturdays. The school feels like one big family. Academically it is very challenging and flexible to the students interests and schedule. My son has had great opportunities with dual enrollment at the college and he is only in 9th grade. I highly recommend it!
Posted by a parent on 5/4/2016The principal, Cory Oliver, is trying to do something different here, he's trying to create a school where academic rigor is fostered in a safe environment and he's trying to do it in a way that realistically prepares his students for their college career. That sounds like a no-brainer, but I doubt you'll find this environment at the other local high school. He has no tolerance for drugs, bullying, or any sort of violence, which I appreciate. He has three main teachers working at the school, Mr. Rompella (Sciences), Ms. Moody (Math), and Mr. Louis (Social Sciences) who cross disciplines while managing a growing student body and engaging students in activities. They manage these tasks with grace and are highly dedicated to their students. All three teachers offer extensive after school and weekend tutoring/study sessions and work selflessly in the interest of preparing students for college life. The only thing missing at this point is a dedicated English teacher, Mr. Oliver has had to take over these duties so he's effectively performing two jobs at once. Is it your typical high school? Definitely not. It may sometimes seems a bit unorganized, but high school life is hectic and the challenges of building a program like this in such a small community are complex. Yes, parents are required to participate extensively, but if as a parent you don't realize you have a prominent role in your child's education you need to sharpen up your parenting skills. My son is approaching his third year at the school and at the end of this year will have earned 12 college credits. He has already earned a Microsoft Office certification thanks to Mr. Oliver's emphasis on technological literacy.Overall, I appreciate the dedication of the staff and I am glad I had the option to put my son in this program.
Posted by a parent on 5/4/2016They can't keep teachers. The principal makes the parents do all of the hard work. He is scatterbrained. I don't know, I feel sorry for him but he needs help or something. He needs to write down what he says he will do so he doesn't forget. I used to be proud to say that I was in this school but it has a bad reputation now. Who is watching out for us?
Posted by a student on 4/19/2015I just want to suggest that there is a certain child that may do better here... but for a social, active child, the Key West High School may be a better option. Consider your choices for classes, for clubs, for career support, for languages, sports, and the all around high school experience before you consider this school. I pulled my daughter after a year and she is finally thriving in her new school

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI used to go to this school and my experience was not as bad as my little brother. I was bullied by the other students sometimes when the teachers SHOULD have saw it and was often confused by the messy learning system. However for my little brother not only has he been bullied by students but by a teacher as well A GROWN ADULT would mock him and yell at him for every little thing he has done despite him being a child and the worst part is when he'd try to talk to the office people they would NEVER listen to his side of the story even the one person I had a good terms with when I used to go there would tell him to shut up every time he'd try to talk to him who would then send him home causing his grades to drop. I sense discrimination but it could be them just being lazy at their job regardless of if they can't even LISTEN to a child when they try to speak for themselves, they should not have this job in the first place.Other Review9mo ago - Poinciana Elementary School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating Averagegood school.one thing that can be done away with is the rude wanna-be officer who harasses older people picking up their children and grandkids and putting the students in danger worried more about the fire lane situation...i am very pleased that there is a kwpd officer at the school full-time who engages with the teachers and parents and uses common sense when situations arise....the wanna-be officer uses "selective enforcement" of her own and i feel she is not needed in that she serves no purpose whatsoever at the schoolOther Review5y ago - Gerald Adams Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AveragePlease don't listen to the negative reviews, my daughter has been at this school for 3 years now and it has been the most positive experience. The learning curriculum is geared to set your child up for success and the principal and staff are the most kind and compassionate leaders and teachers a child (and parent) could ask for. I love that faith is the foundation of their teaching principles and my child has thrived in their care.Parent Review1mo ago - Montessori Children's School

They are self-directed, respectful and empathetic individuals. It's a whole-child education. I continue to be surprised at what they learned about their world at MCS.Parent Review1y ago - The Basilica School
