Read what parents are saying about Shirley Avenue Elementary SchoolMy son attended the PALS (Preschool for All Learners) program at Shirley this year. I was nervous sending my 4 year old, non verbal son with autism to school. As soon as I entered the office, my nerves subsided as I was warmly greeted by Patty. She was so kind and helpful during the enrollment process. My sons teacher, Ms. Morales was truly exceptional. The love and dedication she shows her students is remarkable. My son has made such progress over this past year. I am forever grateful that she was my sons teacher.
Posted by a community member on 6/12/2023Our daughter started TK here, and we all really love the school and the experience she's had here so far. Her teacher is very engaging with both students and the parents. It's wonderful to always be in the know of what's going on almost on a daily basis at the school and in my daughter's class. The school also feels very safe as there is 100% supervision at morning drop off and after school pickups. Children are not left to their own devices and teachers and aids stay with students until their parents arrive. There are also good facilities that I've seen. Recently a new playground was installed for the older children as well as an update on the blacktop painting. One thing that I've noticed this school has that my daughter absolutely raves about is the school garden. Her teacher is able to take the class to a small but quaint garden that the children can play in, eat lunch in, and spend their afternoons in. Since parent involvement seems to be such a high priority at the school, I also very confident that volunteering my time here will be well spent for the good of the whole school. Finally, I do not need these services, but I have noticed a large presence and initiative in assisting students and parents who are ESL learners with programs designed to help the student succeed as well as help the parent attain the tools they need to help their child be successful throughout their schooling. As with everything, school is largely what you make of it. If you take the time to help your child succeed alongside their teachers, they will surely succeed and resources will be better allocated as the school collectively scores higher on state mandated tests.

Posted by a parent on 8/2/2013Really Great And Safe School. When i was there my time was fun learning experience. I hope Ms. Kojayan, Mr. Santoyo, and & Mr.Walsh is there. My favorite teacher was Mr.Walsh because he diversified us into learning new things everyday. -William Bonilla

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter attended this school for two years. Coming from a public school it was a completely new environment in the most positive way. Small class size, caring teachers, wonderful staff and a true community feel. St. Martins really prepared her for high school. My daughter is now excelling in difficult honors and AP classes. Couldn't ask for a better place to send your children.Parent Review5y ago - Agbu Manoogian-Demirdjian

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur child has been attending preschool here, though only because our resident school (LAUSD assigned school) is a very low-performing, bottom-of-the-barrel type school and we are still playing the lottery for the better charter schools in our area. I have to say that nearly all the preschool teachers, are warm, welcoming, and seem to truly enjoy what they do. The grounds are very secure and there are always private security guards waling the grounds, the school is well organized and drop-off/pick-up, even if super busy, is always very smooth. However, as some reviewers have noted, the school is very expensive and all afterschool enrichment classes you have to pay for (though this is true for public schools as well). All private preschools in the same tuition range offer an 8AM-5PM/5:30PM day, but this school has decided that their cut off is 3:00PM and if you want extended hours you have to pay an additional fee. I also find it odd that the parents have to contribute $200+ (as of 2023) per child each year towards a gift fund for the child's teachers and the principle. It seems like we are bribing them with gifts to guarantee that they are "kind" to our children. However, my bigger issue is the lack of rigorous academic curriculum AND blatant discrimination against children with a disability. As another reviewer noted, they adhere to the CA standards (because they have to) and that's it. History is thought through a Western and colonial lens, indigenous peoples and their achievements are largely ignored; world history focuses on the West and Asia, starting around 8000 BC, so hundreds of thousands of years of human history are not even touched on and Africa (minus Egypt) get left out of World History. And this is what I got from a short conversation with the curriculum development director. As someone who teaches at a Tier 1 research university in the US, their academic shortcomings and prejudice are obvious; not a place where I would allow my children to continue their education.Parent Review6mo ago - Applied Scholastics Academy Valley
