Read what parents are saying about J. O. Combs Middle SchoolI get bullied constantly and nobody who works there does anything about it. Also, there are a lot of fights and in general the school isn’t safe.

Posted by a parent on 11/7/2022Overall, I’d say this school is generally pretty mediocre from personal experience. I went to this school for 7/8th grade starting in 2020. Homework:As a mostly honors student, didn’t have any problems with homework for the most part, as the teachers I had usually assigned incomplete work as the only homework, which was enough.Teachers: Speaking of teachers, I definitely liked the vast majority. I can’t speak for everybody, but I can only recall 2 undesirable teachers and 1 long-term substitute. Most teachers (especially the fantastic music teacher, which unfortunately just moved to Crismon) were great with punishment, workload, help, and encouragement. However, one teacher I had seemed very “out of touch” if I had to describe it. Their co-teacher was good though. The other teacher ended up leaving in the middle of the year for one reason or another, but had a problem with workload. The substitutes were all better than the original teacher. Speaking of substitutes, the long-term one I noted previously had many issues. The same situation happened again (teacher retired) and we had a long-term substitute for the remainder of the year. Problem was, it was an honors math class and they had no certification. They were also generally unpleasant and commonly known as a “bad sub”. I didn’t have as many problems with them personally, but we were forced to complete a sort of online course. The course was horrible and the sub couldn’t help it. The vast majority of students should’ve failed, but were just given D grades at the end (including me).Music/fine arts:Overall, outstanding arts teachers. Never heard of any bad ones at the school. Personally, I was being taught by the art and band teachers. Both of them are the best I’ve ever seen in my life. Both incredibly kind and very experienced. They were both conscious of their students’ problems and treated them as young adults, as they should be. Unfortunately, as stated previously, the music teacher was recently replaced, so I cannot speak of them as of yet. One notable action from previous the band director was that they once worked nearly the entire day with appendicitis and came back as soon as they possibly could. They were legendary. However, the instruments are in complete disrepair. Many instruments were personally owned by the director and those that were not were either heavily damaged or didn’t work. No French horns were in any reasonable condition.Sports: Overall very good. Not much else to say.

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI’m really disappointed in this school. We went to this school for one year and it’s honestly very disappointing. First they give the kids computers with almost no restrictions. My daughter doesn’t even own a phone which is what we prefer yet they give her a computer and we can’t even opt out because all their school work is on there. So obviously our daughter started getting on things she shouldn’t and things she wouldn’t be able to get on at home. There is so much social media influencing the kids that they honestly don’t need. Then they don’t teach the children accountability with homework. My daughter missed 20+ assignments the first quarter and we didn’t get any notification. Her being a 7th grader we tried to empower her to be more independent so we trusted that when we asked if her work was done, we believed her hence the accumulation of 20+ missing assignments. Then they didn’t deduct points for said late work when she turned it in. In our opinion this is just setting kids up for failure in the future. Then there are kids bullying kids calling them the “N” word and other hurtful comments yet they just get a slap on the wrist. I can’t wait to get my daughters out of this school. By the way I have spoken to two different moms and they said they have gone through similar stuff with this school and one mom actually took their kids out too. I should have gone with my gut and went with a higher rating School but I was giving them the benefit of the doubt but I was wrong. Also, unfortunately because my daughter has good grades and is in honor classes. When I went to get my daughter tested for ADHD/ADD the doctor couldn’t go forward because the teachers didn’t write in the questionnaire that she kept missing work and the only reason she had good grades was because we were on top of her. Dang do we have to let our daughter fail to get real results from the teachers. That’s pretty messed up.Parent Review1y ago - Jack Harmon Elementary School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageIf I could put 0 stars, I would. The teacher and staff we have worked with have been rude, disinterested, and evasive. We have had several meetings, all which began before school even started, to try to get our son the help he needs. Despite having several diagnoses, they fought us every step of the way and refused simple things such as sticking a visual schedule on his desk. The entire school and district, to be honest, has failed our son in more ways than I can describe here. What is supposed to be a formative year for education has turned out to be a nightmare and I know will impact our son negatively for years to come. If your child needs any love, attention, or extra help, RUN! You’d be better off having them watch tv or play video games all day than send them here.Parent Review1y ago - Ellsworth Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe amount of bullying is high, even the teachers will join in against students. They have very unprofessional teachers. The ignorance amongst the administration is unbelievable. The principal has no idea what she is doing. The teachers will have favoritism and will neglect the other students they do not favor. They don’t even have homework. The educational expectation is low. Your kids will not gain anything from attending here. Look elsewhere. Avoid this school at all cost!!Parent Review2y ago - Freedom Christian Academy
