4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMatthew Maury is now Naomi Brooks Elementary School. My child likes the school better than I do, but I’m happy she’s happy. There is very little communication between parents and teachers outside of teacher conferences. Now with Covid, you basically don’t step foot in the school. There’s opportunities for parents to be involved (which I am), but that involvement is PTA related and really doesn’t provide insight into what’s going on with your child. I’d say each year, you probably talk to the teacher less than 60 minutes total (and I attend everything). If your kid is average/high average, it seems that no one really encourages their strengths. If there are are concerns issues, they don’t seem to think outside the box, instead they stick to their party line. I don’t know everyone’s situation, but I think this is part of why I’m seeing many families leave for private school.Parent Review2y ago - Alexandria City High School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageFrom firsthand knowledge, it is regrettable to report that George Washington Middle School is grappling with significant challenges. The school's environment, instead of fostering learning and development, is often dominated by unruly and occasionally violent behavior. The administration, tasked with managing these issues, appears to provide insufficient support to teachers to address these challenges effectively. Their unresponsiveness not only intensifies the burden on those dealing with these behavioral problems daily but also significantly hinders the overall learning process. Moreover, the school faces additional systemic issues. The misuse of electronic devices, insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration among teachers, and a flawed approach to student recognition all contribute to a disheartening environment that calls for decisive intervention and transformation. One issue that merits particular attention is the handling of the honors program. What should be an emblem of academic achievement has become disappointingly disconnected from genuine merit. The school's (and ACPS's) focus on critical race theory seems to have driven this shift, leading to a disturbing trend of recognizing underachievement and distorting the true purpose of the honors program. Instead of distinguishing high-achieving students, it appears that virtually anyone can be designated an honors student, thus undermining the program's credibility and devaluing the accomplishments of truly deserving students. In light of the existing challenges, George Washington Middle School may benefit from an external intervention by the state. A comprehensive transformation focusing on reestablishing discipline, educational excellence, and genuine merit-based recognition is urgently needed.Put plainly, the situation at George Washington Middle School is a cause for concern. As someone intimately familiar with the school's inner workings, it is my hope that bringing these issues to light will help trigger the necessary reforms. This is a critical step in ensuring that the school can fulfill its central role in educating and preparing our future generations.Other Review9mo ago - Check out schools near 1200 Braddock Pl #506.

"Easy walk to metro and drive downtown is not bad outside of rush hour. Plenty of bus stops and bike racks. "
- Christopher S.

"VA to MD is a 20-30 minute venture but VA to DC or DC / MD to VA is probably an hour to two hour traffic filled nightmare. Vice versa going from VA to MD in the afternoon where the traffic pattern reverses. So if you work in MD and live in VA you can commute no issue. Working in DC and living elsewhere would be problematic. as would be working in MD and commuting anywhere."

"Use of the Braddock Road metro is a great way to commute to the neighborhood. It is also a very easy to commute in the neighborhood via bicycle and walking. Commuting in a car can be a little slow during rush hours during the weekdays, and heavy foot traffic makes it important to watch for pedestrians."

"zento sushi is the best cheap sushi in the country, the Charles Houston rec center is a treasure and commuting to any neighborhood in dc is actually faster from here than it is from most neighborhoods in dc. otherwise this hood can be a bit ...blah. but if you've got little kids that's almost an advantage."
