2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur family's experience has been a nightmare. This is our community. We love the people that live here and would never have believed what has gone on. Bullying purposefully not documented, medications never being administered or documented, and being told in a recent follow up meeting all of my student's IEP items were being continued, it is a great disappointment and loss of trust in some of the most important people in my child's life.Parent Review4y ago - Chester Shell Elementary School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI was quite hesitant to enroll my child in school at Chester Shell Elementary. I will give both the negatives and positives in this review to be fair. Her first week was a huge shock! The Negatives: The class size was not 13 students to 1 teacher as it states on this page; it was 23 : 1. It is now in fact 25 to 1. By the first week she was seriously bullied on the bus and told by the bully he was going to get a gun and shoot her pet. This occurred just after the school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. I called the school immediately. The administration was swift to step in, address the bully and parents, and promised the bully would no longer be on the bus. The next morning, the bully was on the bus. The bully apologized, yet the bully rides every morning. Now for the Positives: My child loves her teacher, the administration, and adores her fellow students. She is engaged, challenged, and thriving academically. The bullying has stopped and she has the courage to ride the bus regardless of the threats she endured.Parent Review6y ago - Check out schools near 6635 SE 221st St #3.

"I’m not too impressed with Hawthorne. It needs more businesses. It’s nice that it’s only 15 minutes or so away from many different cities... Gainesville,Melrose,Micanopy..."

"I moved here from out of state a year and a half ago. I love it here, its quiet and peaceful. It's a very inexpensive place to live in and utilities are cheap as well . Lots of stores and shopping but you will need a car. The only downside is the streets are dirt and will probably stay that way and the county really needs to grade more often. "

"Many people just let their dogs run loose. Not very smart. I'm not sure if people actually care about their pets very much. On the other hand there isnt a whole lot of regulation governing pet ownership."

"People respect each others property. If you like to be left alone then this is the place. My dogs keep strangers away. ] '"

"Commute is by car or carpool only, usually to Gainesville (25 mins) Ocala (40 mins) Palatka (35 mins) or Starke (25 mins)"

"We love our acre, pool and gardens! Hearing a rooster crow off in the distance. Birds singing in the abundant trees. Respectful neighbors are a treasure!!!"

"The town has lots of political and social issues (history of unscrupulous leaders). It lost its police station and fire dept and farmers/craft Saturdays. There is absolutely no culture. There is definite a drug problem that people don't like to talk about. Unscrupulous types hang out at the one park, so residents don't frequent it. Hawthorne is the place where time stood still -- 50 years ago."
