I will talk about four issues: political bias among teachers, limits on free expression, lack of options for advanced students, and AP testing fees.The school often talks about the importance of diversity through programs like EICL, yet there seems to be very little diversity of viewpoints among teachers and administrators. Most appear to lean left politically, with some holding views that many would consider far left. For example, [redacted] taught lessons suggesting that anti-white racism is not a real issue and that affirmative action is beneficial, presenting these ideas as fact rather than encouraging discussion.Another concern is freedom of speech. The student handbook states that "[EPS students] enjoy the right to express an opinion respectfully and have that opinion considered." However, terms like "respectfully" and "considered" are vague and leave a lot of room for interpretation. In practice, this gives the school broad authority to decide which opinions are acceptable, especially when students criticize the school itself.The school also requires all students to take the same science classes, regardless of ability level. This seems to prioritize uniformity over academic challenge. Students who are ahead of their peers often end up unchallenged and bored because there are few opportunities to take more rigorous coursework.Finally, the school charges $225 per AP exam even though the exam itself costs the school about $99. Since the school does not offer AP classes, these fees feel excessive and give the impression that the school is profiting from students who want to earn AP credit.
