As the middle school art teacher at Weilenmann School of Discovery in Summit Park, I am continually inspired by the community I work in. Our school is deeply rooted in a sense of place, and that connection is woven intentionally into our approach to learning. In the art classroom, Utah’s landscape becomes a living muse—its shifting light, rugged textures, and changing seasons invite students to see more closely and express themselves with authenticity and care.Small class sizes allow creativity to unfold thoughtfully. Students are known as individuals, supported in their growth, and encouraged to take creative risks in an environment that values curiosity over perfection. Equally meaningful is the culture among the adults in the building. Our administration is exceptional—thoughtful, supportive, and committed to creating a positive, humane school environment. Because of this, teachers are genuinely happy here, and that joy and stability ripple outward into our classrooms. It is a rare and special place to teach, and I am proud to be part of it. As a former administrator, I am awed in how truly supportive our administrative team is. Doors are always open, and anything I need or want to talk about is validated and supported. Decisions are made together with faculty. For further context, I started teaching 18 years ago and have worked in public, private, and other charter schools across the country. Weilenmann is a place where teachers bring the children to learn; that speaks volumes because most schools that I have worked in teachers sent their children to private school or other magnet schools. Weilenmann also strives to retain teachers, providing onsite childcare options to help mothers balance careers while still being present as a part of their children's formative years. Having children has always seemed elusive, and a choice between having a career or being a stay at home mom. No other district or charter supports teachers as parents the way Weilenmann does. For the first time in 18 years, I feel like becoming a parent is something I could do without sacrificing my career. Weilenmann is not just a school, it's a community that I am proud to be a part of. Our goal is to develop global citizens, that are prepared for the real world, the outdoors, and the increasingly complex society we live in.
