"Dogs greet other dog if allowed by owners. (My dog has many neighbor friends) Huge variety of breeds. No problem dogs. Dog owners pick up! "

"There is not a lot of room for dogs to run around. Not much yard space for apartments, and parks are fairly small and usually crowded."

"Easy access to freeways, main corridors, and public transportation. Can get around South Minneapolis and out to St Paul or out to the suburbs in quick fashion."

"Great place to walk dogs. Old growth trees and old houses to gaze at. Sidewalks on every street. Does get narrow in the winter though. I’ve seen plenty of dogs in the area and cats too. "

"Parks are great and being close to the greenway/lakes make for really wonderful walks and bike rides. Roads can be very busy, especially Lyndale Avenue, so if with kids, use caution. "

"like: some grassy areas to roam in dislike: not sure how many dog parks are in this area but feel that would be an essential for a city dog to get exercise"

"A lot of bus lines (11, 17, 18) run through this neighborhood so it’s easy to get to downtown from Whittier!"

"This neighborhood is not safe at all, I don't like this place. There are no parks, to go out with the children and the only one nearby is full of gangs."

"Lots of great schools in the area, and a lot of family friendly events happen year round. It’s a diverse neighborhood in many ways- age, race, national origin, socio-economic status, and language. "

"not much yard space with the buildings being tightly packed together, but the neighborhood is nice and homey, so long walks work well for exercise"

"My commute is super easy to Minnetonka—roughly 22 minutes to work and about 30 home. Traffic in uptown around Calhoun Square gets heavy, but you get used to it."

"There are multiple bus lines that go through Whittier that makes it easy to get around. Downtown is not too far away either so if I’m up for it sometimes I’ll walk home from work."

"I bike! There are great bike lanes and close access to the greenway that can take you all around town. I don’t like to drive because parking on the streets can be difficult. "

"Pretty much anywhere in the neighborhood is within walking distance to restaurants, stores, and other entertainment (such as MIA, theaters, parks, etc.). Transit and biking are easy. There are many old buildings mixed with other buildings from throughout the past 100 years to new ones today. The makeup is pretty diverse, mostly renter-occupied, and the largest age group is mid-late 20's."

"I’ve lived here for 2 years. Park is nice. Kids like the school. Walking distance to many places. Quick drive to everything else. "

"My main complaint is parking and property crime. I think both are part of living in an urban neighborhood. It's very walkable, great food, shops and parks nearby. Neighbors on my block all know each other and are helpful and friendly. I'm near children's theater, MCAD, MIA, eat street, it's great. I don't love the neighborhood elementary school, my kids go to an arena charter, as do most of the kids we know in the area."

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy kid has been going to Whittier for a few years, and our experience has been very positive. Whittier has great teachers and staff, provides many opportunities for student learning (including after school programs, music lessons, and summer camp), and has many family events. We have had a great experience sending my kid here. We are very happy with their education and what they've learned. My only issues were that MPS Kids no longer offers after school care here, but that is mainly substituted by the after school programs and the community center for older kids. The community center connected to the school is great and offers many great activities for kids in the neighborhood (things like art projects, drones, skateboarding, ice skating, archery, etc.) If you're worried about Whittier having a bad rating, I'd encourage you to visit the school and get to know the staff. We're very happy we selected Whittier, especially being it's out community school and we've enjoyed getting to know the other families that live in our area.Parent Review1y ago16 Reviews - City of Lakes Waldorf School

NAGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThere are some wonderful things about this school and then you see below the surface and wow, what a shame. It is a beautiful place to send your little kids. "The grades" (1-8) are riddled with major problems. Because of the rosy picture that is painted and the beautiful festivals and music, we were blind to the true problems and lack of a solid education our kids were getting. Parents are kept out of the classroom and at arms length, so it isn't clear at first what the kids are missing. I SO wish we had left sooner. We were there for eleven years between our kids. They claim to teach "the science of reading" by tossing around Orton-Gillingham basic training, but they are not teaching reading with any proficiency, and MANY kids are negatively impacted by this. Because reading by some classroom teachers does not start until 2nd grade, it is isn't until 3rd or 4th or even 5th that true reading problems are exposed. This is a SERIOUS disservice to many kids who have gone through this school. It is very very common for kids to need outside tutors for reading. Sometimes this is over 1/3 or 1/2 or a class needing tutoring for reading. Social Emotional wellbeing is one thing that feels centered when touring and learning about the school, and to come to find out it is one of the weakest aspects of the school can be heartbreaking. The approaches taken in middle school often leave lasting pain and inflict unnecessary drama on the students. We came for the beautiful package and as it slowly opened we saw the disfunction that was inside.Parent Review1y ago39 Reviews
