9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageVernon is an amazing community. We love that it’s an IB school, and have been impressed by the ways in which each unit is incorporated in all they do. I’ve never been one to go by ratings alone, so before coming to Vernon we asked friends and neighbors about their experiences. We went to information meetings and social events before kindergarten, and were so impressed. We have never looked back, and feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of this school community. There are always ways in which we can do better. I appreciate the school’s desire to grow and change, to better serve all students. I appreciate the efforts to make decisions with equity at the forefront. Our children will be better human beings thanks to these formative years at Vernon. So very thankful.Parent Review5y ago23 Reviews - Jefferson High School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating Averagehonestly i really like this school so far. ive only been here a year but it seems really nice so far, contrary to what the data says. it seems to be out of date, at the very least the name is, as its now mcdaniel. the teachers are great, the building is super nice and new, its kept fairly clean, and there have only been a couple fights ive seen or heard about. i know franklin high school has had a lot more fights this year than we have. im not sure why, but for some reason the grading standards for core classes are lower here than some other schools like franklin. for example, at franklin you need 90% for an A, whereas here you only need 87.5%. that could be due to the school being in a low income area, if thats the case then thats a little messed up to expect less from a low income neighborhood. the french department could use a little work, theres one french teacher who is very under qualified. i could have learned more on duolingo for a couple months than a year of his class. he only learned french from being in a french speaking country in africa for a little bit and doesnt know a lot of spelling and grammar. my friend who went to le monde french immersion school has to correct the teacher here, not an uncommon experience for other students from that school. overall, i like the school and the atmosphere. it is on 82nd which is a little sketchy but i still feel safe there. also, the school lunch is surprisingly good, and if you have money a lot of food is accessible by foot or bus nearby.Student Review2y ago30 Reviews - Check out schools near Levy code 840.

"Lots of young families and the parks are so close no need for a huge yard! First city we’ve lived in where we’ve become friends with our neighbors."

"Ainsworth has a big boulevard down the middle of it that is popular to walk your dog down. And there is a huge park at the end of Ainsworth and 37th area!"

"Lots of families with children. Slow traffic so many children ride bikes and play basket ball in the street in front of their houses. "

"It’s a unique area with unique people. Not so desirable in my eyes...but everyone is different. One way streets, poorly kept yards, and a Portland weirdness that some may appreciate; not so much me."

"Great community with great local parks for pets. Quiet. Streets are a little small and most residents park their cars on the street making driving around difficult "

"I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 1 year and absolutely love it. My favorite neighborhood in Portland by far. A great mix of young professionals, families, retired individuals are dispersed in my neighborhood. All all very friendly and easy going. Very dog friendly park (Alberta park). Tree lined alleys are great areas for getting away from city for a walk. Neighborhood is close to mcminamins, new seasons, Safeway, Me 24 hr fitness, and all the shops on Killingsworth/Alberta. It can be expensive to live here but is well worth it, definitely an up and coming area with lots of development ahead."

"The Last Thursday event on Alberta Street in the summer is quite magical with crafts, music, and food. They close the street to traffic."

"It's a neighborhood where virtually all struggling families have been displaced. It has rapidly gentrified and many smaller, affordable homes are being demolished in favor of new, overpriced McMansions and McDuplexes."

"It’s a neighborhood made of amazing people instead of just “hip” businesses. Also, best bridge in Portland, hands down. "
