Monocacy National Battlefield offers walking trails that interpret the 1864 battle that saved Washington, D.C., from advancing Confederate forces. Some 40 miles of the 2,170-mile Appalachian Trail follow the western border of Frederick County, much of it along South Mountain.
Within a short drive, residents and guests can reach other attractions, including Gettysburg Battlefield, Antietam Battlefield and the historic Burnside Bridge, the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve, and several ski resorts.
