After giving it a great deal of thought, I have decided not to return this year. I feel as though a tremendous weight has been lifted off my shoulders. The school has too many internal and systemic issues that prevent teachers from truly supporting their students. The bilingual program, in particular, brings funding to both the school and the district, yet the students in that program are too often met with a lack of compassion, held to unfair standards, and treated more harshly than they deserve. This has been happening for a long time. I repeatedly voiced my concerns, but they were consistently dismissed and ignored. I can no longer be part of a system that prioritizes funding over the well-being, dignity, and success of its students.
